Is the Amazon Kindle Fire power adapter necessary?

My daughter just got the Kindle Fire HD (which we all know does not come with a wall power adapter).
Can she use a USB power adapter that she has for her iPhone instead of now paying $20 for the Amazon adapter?

Steven, the Fire HD does come with a USB cable that can be used to charge, via a computer. That however is pretty slow, you would pretty much need to leave it plugged in overnight to get a full charge. If your daughter has the new iPhone, it has a micro USB port, which would work, to plug the Fire into a wall plug. Many other cell phone chargers also work.
