Frustrated by Kindle Fire HD email

The short version is that my Kindle Fire HD email app rarely shows any email, even though there is mail.

Two of the email accounts are with POP3 providers (different hosts) and two are GMail. I set up the Kindle accounts identically to the way they are set upon my Thunderbird Windows desktop email client.

The main symptom is that no mail is listed. I can access the accounts with webmail clients and see lots of emails. On a rare occasion an email will show, but then it goes away. I can send emails OK. GMail shows all of the folders, and works sometimes.

Sometimes I get the message "Authentication failed" on one or another of the accounts (both POPO3 and Gmail) when synchronizing. Which account seems random.

I've deleted and recreated accounts on the Kindle, and sometimes it will work one time on a new account, but stop working afterwards. I never have problems with my desktop client.

Here are some particulars about the POP accounts:

Account 1
Incoming settings:
Port: 110
Security type: STARTTLS (accept all certificates)

Account 2
Incoming settings:
Port 995
Security type SSL/TLS (accept all certificates)

For the K9 account that works, I set up Account 2 as
Incoming server settings:
Security: SSL (always)
Authentication: Plain
Port: 995

What is very frustrating is the total lack of informative error messages and diagnostic information from the the Kindle default Email program.

I think you need to delete and redo those email accounts, I have gmail on my kindle and a yahoo and I've not had any probs at all. The frustrations I have is the 'good' apps (eg:FING Network, WIGuide for Netflix) can't be downloaded for the HD because they aren't 'optimized' for the HD (buy the cheaper kindle n you get MORE apps) and it's not clear if Amazon is checking for 'virus/malware' on apps that are available.

However, for email no problems, also there is varies settings you can do so your email is checked 'more/less' often.

If you had read my original comment, you would have see that I have already tried deleting the accounts and re-creating them. Also I am using another POP3 service, not the ones working for you.

Cannot access Verizon or Gmail incoming emails on the Kindle Fire HD. A long chat session with a Kindle Support rep bore no results. She was as helpful as could be, but had to forward the issue to "engineers" who were to follow up. That was five days ago and I haven't heard a word from them. Just finished printing the return labels for the Kindle and accessories I purchased. This thing is going back to Amazon and I'm going for the iPad.

This is so frustrating. I have the new 7"Fire HD and my Gmail gives me "authentication failed" messages. It worked for awhile then this started. The only solution a rep came up with was to deregister my Fire and the reinstall everything. That worked for two weeks and it has started again. I was on the phone with her for over an hour. Will I have to do this every couple of weeks? I am going out of the country for a month and this was the only device I had planned on taking. What now?

Try another mail program like K-9 Mail. Works for me. I wouldn't waste any time on the Kindle Mail program, at least not until there's an update.

The total Gmail setup for K-9 Mail is your gmail address and a password. That's all there is to it.

For some reason which mystified me ALL off the accounts I set up started working to receive mail.

I have a theory, but it's just a theory.

I have a desktop email client (Thunderbird) which is set up to periodically download all of my email accounts to the desktop. It doesn't delete them from the server, but I THINK they get somehow marked as read. When the Kindle mail goes to access them, it thinks that they aren't new and doesn't show them, so as a result the Kindle never shows any mail at all.

What throws me is that my iPhone mail program shows all the mail and the K-9 mail program on the Kindle shows all the mail and of course the Webmail client shows all the mail.

If that theory is true, then the only reason that I'm getting mail right now is that my home desktop computer is turned off right now. That's not as big a problem as it seems because I'm unlikely to need to read email on the Kindle unless I'm away from home for an extended period and would have turned off the desktop.

I thought I tested for this issue way back when, but then there were so many combinations of security settings and such that I might not have made a valid test. In any case, the next step is to see if the Kindle mail has some way to download ALL of the mail.

I just took a new Kindle fire to Panama. Prior to leaving I could access gmail. Of course I had to login to a new wireless system and while I could get on the web I could not get into gmail. got the "authentication failed" message. when I got home, gmail tells me that someone tried to access my account from Panama - and I so wish that someone could have done that! my friends using the same wireless system with ipads could get me into my gmail account which mitigated some of the problems but VERY disappointing.
Now I wonder if amazon is going to come up with a fix??? Any news?

D. Williams - Google updated gmail recently. Here is Amazon's fix -

Reboot your Kindle Fire.
- Make sure it's fully charged. Unplug the Fire.
- Hold the power button in for a full 30 seconds (count them).
- Press the power button again to turn it back on.
- The "kindle fire" screen will appear for a couple of minutes while it's coming back on.

After rebooting, please make sure that you are connected wirelessly and can browse the internet.

- Connect the device to a charger.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Sync.

You should let your device go into sleep mode for at least 15 minutes to allow the update to download.

If the problem still persists, remove and re-add your email account.

Contact customer support if you still have problems with emails.

Click on the big orange 'CONTACT US' button to the right or use this link if you do not see the button:
You may have to sign in. I recommend you use the PHONE or CHAT options.
Do NOT use e-Mail.
CALL ME under the PHONE tab is great if available.

In case you haven't had a good answer for this yet, I had the same problem with gmail. I finally fixed it by using the name GOOGLEMAIL instead of Gmail to connect to it. Once that was done, it worked fine.

J Lewis says:
My wife complained that the e-mails she read from her Virgin media account on the HD Kindle no longer downloaded to her Outlook client despite "Never delete from server" selected on the Kindle. I didn't believe her at first because I have no difficulty on my android phone also connected to a Virginmedia account. But now I see that somehow the mail does seem to be marked and then deleted from the Virgin media server! You can watch it happen. However I notice that my phone uses the virgin IMAP server instead of the POP server - but I cannot set up to download from the IMAP server on the Kindle. Is this a Kindle issue or a Virginmedia mailbox issue? Maybe the Kindle can be stopped "re-syncing" back to the Virginmedia mailbox - because I guess this must happen. Any tips?

I tried going into the incoming settings for my email account and retyping the password and that seems to have fixed it. The first time it said it was wrong when I pushed done, but it wasn't, but I logged out and back in on my pc and then retried it and the problem seems to have gone away. If you get an authentication error, there should be a little number next to your kindles name in the upper left corner, which means your kindle has a notification. Swipe down from the top or the screen and you can check the notification, which should tell you more about the error, at least it did in my case, telling me it was an incorrect username/password for my email account on yahoo. I am not sure what causes it since my password and email address hadn't changed, but at least this seems to have fixed it, for now at any rate.

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 14, 2014 7:59:30 AM PST
Mike, what causes the "incorrect username/password" for yahoo is that the yahoo servers are not allowing any log ons or the connection dropped before the log on could complete. I get that message now and then on my PC. I do nothing and later it logs in correctly.

Once when I got that message, I tried to log into Yahoo mail directly and got the error that the mail was unavailable - to try again later. Now I just wait it out.

Mike Rustad says:
Ah, that makes sense, probably because I was downloading something on my pc, thus getting a low amount of bandwidth on my kindle, causing the connection to time out. Except for that my secondary email works fine, which leads me to believe it is something else. Both are yahoo accounts.

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 14, 2014 10:02:52 AM PST
Maybe which bank of servers has that account on it? A different bank of servers may have the other account on it? I really have no idea but I do know some people seem to have intermittent issues and some people say they never run into it.

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 14, 2014 3:43:49 PM PST
Mike Rustad says:
That is a possiblity. The account that wasn't working is a much older account. It was working on my pc all the time, but I believe kindle uses the mobile version which could have been having the problem.

I've found this site to be the most helpful, as once you start the process, everything you need is already filled in, except for me the incoming was under tls, so I changed it to ssl. And be sure to check your ports with your mail provider here:
