When you hook up the kindle fire to your TV to watch a movie etc. with the micro hdmi cable, does it also charge the kindle fire or do you have to have the charger hooked up as well?

The hdmi out port is not the same as the usb charging/data transfer port.

The new Fires do not use hdmi.

Bixillarla says:
The Hdmi is a output port only, it does not charge the Kindle.

You can't hook your Kindle Fire to your TV with a micro USB cable, if that's what you're trying to do.

FOLKS - pay attention to the Date and References...

SOME of the "previous" Kindle Fires had a micro-HDMI port for A/V output to HDTV.
This was in addtion to the micro-USB port for charging and file transfers.

Lucretia asked about a Fire TV. Which is not a Fire tablet device.

Donna -- your micro-HDMI cable will not charge your Fire; it will only transmit media to your tv. However, some micro cables, like the Amazon slimport adapter for the Fire HD 6, have a built-in charging port on the cable into which you can plug your charger. In that case, you can simultaneously charge your device and watch content on the tv.

OhioFarmGirl says:
The slimport for the HD 6 is specific to that device. I don't know if it would fit your device. But maybe there is one specific for your device.

EDIT: Actually, it says the adapter is only for 4th generation devices. I don't know what gen your device is.

I recently read an article about a scientist who is experimenting with technology to charge devices through the air from nearby electrical outlets. It's sounds fantastic...although I wonder if it would somehow harm humans. The scientist is a young woman.

PS56k says:
Just to clarify -
The Slimport technology IS the micro-USB hardware inside the HD6 (for example),
and it uses the standard micro-USB pins to output the HDMI data signal.

The "Slimport Adapter" merely plugs into the Fire HD6 micro-USB connector,
and then has a standard HDMI connector for the wiring transformation.

It will NOT magically create a Slimport HDMI connection on a NON-Slimport device, it's just a wiring/cable adapter.
