Is there a way to manage collections on a kindle touch (using a windows program). Also is there a way to view the books on my kindle that aren't in a collection, when I sort by collections only the collections show, and when I show most recent everything shows. Is there a way to view the books that aren't in a collection so I can have everything organized?

Books that aren't in a collection appear immediatly after the collections (when sorted by collections). So if you have collection A, B, C, your unsorted books would appear immedialy after that.

Marc says:
That is correct for the old kindle, the new one when sorted by collections only shows the collections.

Did anyone find luck? Managing collections on the device is painful esp after you setup kindle firstime and load all the books.
I found a plugin (for Calibre) to do the collections management, but they claim it does not work for kindle touch as amazon changed something in touch.

Marc, On my touch I have it set up by collections and it still showes the ones not in collections at the end. Same as my kindle 2.

I have found that it's easier on the touch than on, say like my Kindle 2. For one thing, you can move books into collections more than one at a time. Fantastic when you've just down loaded and converted 16 pdf books. Same for the archive books. One update that I've been begging for. It was worth getting the touch for that feature. If you tell your Kindle touch to sort by author or title it will show everything too.

Freda, I'm glad you posted that...I just got a Touch at my local exchange (this is why brick and mortar stores work--when you can pick up and handle and object it is much more tempting) and I saw the comment about the collections view not showing unsorted books--yikes! That's how I tell what I've yet to organize after a mass freebie download. Thanks for clarifying!

I have had the device less than a day now, and as it was a spur of the moment purchase I'd not yet gone through the online user's guide...I am curious as to what you mean by moving books into collections more than one at a time. How do you do this? Often I'll download a whole series or a batch of freebies and want to dump them in my 'freebie to be read' collection all at once and that would be useful!

Jackie, to move one book into a collection you put your finger on the title of the book and hold it there. That makes a menu pop up that's really cool. You can go look to see the cover of the book and what the book is about. Also (the important part) you can click on "put in collection" and tell it where to go.

To move more than one book into a single collection, click on the collection and hold it the same way you did the title of the book. That brings up a menu that has "add or delete" books. Click on that. It gives you a list of ALL your books. Scroll through and click on the books you want to add. Then click on done and it moves them right into the collection. Much faster than the old way.

From the archives you can scroll through and just click on the books you want to move over to your kindle. They will go lighter in color and when you are done they will be active on your kindle. If you have already had them in a collection the first time you got them, they will go right into that collection. If not then you need to move them to the collection of your choice.

I didn't realize how great this was until I set up my kindle 2 for my granddaughter. I factory reset it for her and then moved all the young adult books I had downloaded over the last year for her. I still had my collecitons on my kindle (they didn't go away because I didn't re-regester, just re-set) and some of the books went right to the collections. Then I had to delete the collections and now I need to set her back up with collections for her and move the books over. One. at. a. time. After using the touch this is a real pain. :-) Took me an hour to move her books. On the touch it took ten minutes.

I got mine at Target. Son took me shopping and told me to pick something out for Christmas. Woo Hoo.

One last thing, you may find yourself haveing a bit of trouble getting use to turning pages but after two and a half days I have it now. :-)

Thanks a lot for your hint. It was very handy. But in any case, if we can manage collections through a desktop (say all collections are folders), it would have been greatly easier. (then probably, we may have a book only in a single collection- but thats of a lesser problem than dealing collections like this..)

I'd like to be able to do it via the computer too. But at least it's a LOT easier than it use to be so Amazon is listening. :-)

Thanks! I can already tell downloading from the archives is faster! Tap, tap, tap and yay!

I was a little worried about the indexing...I downloaded about 50 books to start and not even a hint the indexing was going on. Plugged it in overnight and woke up and all was done :).

I too wish collections could be managed on the computer AND the manage my Kindle page could use them too. I now have over 1200 things--I have a bad case of freebie-itis, at least 500 are unread somethings or references for 'later' (yea, I'll need that book on physics or the one on canning vegetables ANY day now..). Unfortunately I am also a pack rat and it is painful not to keep everything on the Kindle--even my 'utter crap' collection stays. The only things I can bear to not have on the device are the huge, the photo laden, or just too much for the 8 and under crowd.

In any case, a way to organize them on my computer AND my Amazon account would be nice. I had to make a vow to ignore the freebie threads until after the new year...hmm...I guess that is why Amazon gave us that Kindle recommendation email, I think I will go use it!

I love it! Collection called "utter crap". LOL I had my kindle a year before I bought a book. Then realized that I use to buy books in a store at least once a month. So started to buy ones I really wanted. But some of thoes freebies are great.

LOL. We must have been separated at birth for you describe me perfectly.

It was driving me nuts that I could not have collections across devices since the Fire doesn't support them. I broke down and imported everything into Shelfari yesterday and got 500 'tagged' (I consider it their version of collections.)

Still more to do and then there is today's....

Isn't this fun? :-)

Nospin, you said: "I broke down and imported everything into Shelfari yesterday and got 500 'tagged'"

Does importing into Shelfari and tagging books there somehow help with organisation on your Kindle? Can you import back to Kindle and then your Kindle will recognise those tags?

I just had my kindle replaced so added all the books to the new one. I had everything sorted into collections on the old kindle. I've started to recreate (pain in the butt) the collections and the slow process of identifying what book goes where. My question is, why do the books still show in the list when they have been moved into a collection? I know on my old kindle I could change what was on the view but I can't figure out how to on this one. I would only like to see the collections (and if there are books not in the collections they are ok at the bottom). Any idea? It's making me crazy and I've avoided using it because it's a mess.

ooo, you could import the collections from your old kindle

In reply to an earlier post on Aug 22, 2012 10:41:33 AM PDT
the old kindle is dead :-(

In reply to an earlier post on Aug 22, 2012 10:45:15 AM PDT
I have a kindle keyboard...not sure if that's the difference. I do not have a 'sort by' option on this one. Is there another way?

CBRetriever says:
yes, but if you haven't deregistered it yet, you could still import the collections

it would save you a lot of work

I think it's in the upper right corner - maybe it says recent or author or title?

click on that and select collections

In reply to an earlier post on Aug 22, 2012 10:47:36 AM PDT
LOL I'm not sure if I did or not. Is there a way to check? This should be an easy task yet it's taking up a LOT of time.

In reply to an earlier post on Aug 22, 2012 10:49:34 AM PDT
THANK you! That was it! I knew it had to be easy..just couldn't find it. Really appreciate the help.
