Why am I suddenly getting ads on my Kindle 3G that I paid full price for?

Beth says:
Did you change the unsubscribe button on the Manage Your Kindle page? This last week Amazon made it possible to turn on ads if you wanted them.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 21, 2011 8:04:15 PM PST
Thank you Beth! I'm sure I didn't turn these special offers on, but they're off now.

Somebody says:
Make sure you don't get charged for turning them off.

People have said that they have tested turning on and off and not gotten any message from Amazon saying they were charged. That does assume that the OP is correct that he/she had the nonAd one to begin with.

California Reader....you may want to give them a chance for a few days. I did and used one of the coupons for a humor book for a buck. It was a second in a series that I was watching. In one shot I saved eight bucks. :-)

How odd. If you buy the SO version and turn it off, you can't turn it on again. Wonder why the non-SO owners can waltz back and forth.

Can I upgrade a Kindle Touch with Special Offers to be an ad-free Kindle Touch?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 22, 2011 12:00:00 PM PST
Yes. It will cost you the difference between the two models. You can do it on the Manage Devices section of the Manage Your Kindle page.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 22, 2011 12:01:59 PM PST
Maybe because they paid more for their Kindle so Amazon gives them the option.

Malachi says:
But, people who upgrade their special offer devices have paid the same amount.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 22, 2011 12:13:28 PM PST
I'm just guessing, that's why I said "maybe".

That is why I was wondering what the story is now. I can think of 3 possibilities and I am sure there are more. 1) Amazon has changed their policy (very recent) and once you upgrade you now will be able to go back. 2) The will not let you turn back on the SO because that is what they said. 3) the people who had the full price one and have tested the on/off process will find a surprise charge on their bill. #3 is the least likely just because of Amazon being generally good about sending an email when they charge you.

Amazon probably uses the serial number to know if the Kindle was an SO version or not. If an SO version paid to remove the ads and then chose to subscribe to them again, the Amazon computer program probably does not know the difference between that and an SO that never paid to remove the ads. Programs can be modified however.

I just went to the MYK section of my account and clicked on the edit button where it says unsubscribe to see if their message has changed. Indeed it has. It no longer warns me that if I unsubscribe I can not resubscribe in the future. Looks like a change in their overall SO policy to me.

Why would Amazon care. They're getting paid for the ads AND getting paid the Kindle users. Sounds like a win-win to me... for Amazon.

Why are ads popping into my reading space when I'm just reading book reviews of discounted/price drop books? It's new tonight on my Kindle Fire, but I'm ready to quit reading reviews after only a couple of them covering up what I'm trying to read. Is there something I can do to prevent them? I don't want the Fire if they are included.

Somebody says:
I assume you're using the browser when this happens, but are you on the Amazon site?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 22, 2011 8:53:25 PM PST
Erich says:
Where is this happening? On a website? We're going to need more information about what you're doing when you see the ads... Amazon doesn't have an ad sponsored Fire, so it's probably nothing to do with the Fire itself, but there are lots of ads all about the Internet.

Yes--reading book reviews on the Amazon site using Kindle Fire. This evening is the first time I've experienced it. I wonder if I'm inadvertently clicking somewhere that is an ad. They are obnoxious--hover over the review blocking my view.

Somebody says:
That happened to me on my computer once when I was on an Amazon page. I tried to figure out what happened, but was stumped. What you suggest makes sense: might have clicked on an ad by mistake. I would guess that'd be extra-easy on the Fire's touch screen.

AmeliaAT says:
I didn't even know that Amazon pages had ads. (I use Adblock Plus so I wouldn't see them if they were there.) That seems odd to have ads for something else on a page that's already selling you something. Has anyone created an adblocker for the Silk browser?

Somebody says:
I think the ad that popped up on my computer was for a Sony product, or maybe it was an image ad with no specific product mentioned. Can't remember.

triplesss says:
I saw two different ads repetitively. One had a cow on it and I think the other one was something about children. I kept trying to move the screen so I could read and the ad just followed and sat on top of what I was trying to read. It's the most annoyed I've been while on the Amazon site!

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 23, 2011 11:07:21 AM PST
Somebody says:
Had you been to any other site just prior to going to the Amazon site? Maybe it was a pop-up designed to do that -- carry over to a future site. I don't know if that's possible, but it did cross my mind when it happened to me.
