text-to-speech: how did I live without it?

Why isn't there more discussion of the text-to-speed feature? When I have time, I would much rather read than be read to by any audio. However, I love my kindled DX text-to-speed feature that keeps my book going when I have mindless tasks that must be done all too often. I hate getting a good book started and then having to drag it out over a long time because of too little time to sit down and read. I don't want to pay twice for audio and ereader versions, even if they are synch'd. I certainly hope that kindle continues to support this feature and to encourage publishers to enable it.

The only Kindles currently being sold that offers TTS are the Kindle DX and the Fires. The latest e-readers do not have any audio capabilities.

In addition, the publisher decides whether TTS is available on a book, not Amazon.

I don't understand why there is not enough demand to get this feature on more kindle versions.
In addition, I suppose that Amazon has some influence with publishers. Fortunately, many do support the feature.

It doesn't matter what the demand is, Amazon chose to eliminate the audio capabilities on the e-ink Kindles, partly in order to keep the prices lower. Personally, I really disliked the TTS on my K2 (which is the same as on your DX) and only used it when my eyes were dilated at the eye doctor. My Fire does sound better, but I still don't like listening to a robotic voice reading words that have no meaning to it. I'll listen to professional audio books on my MP3 player instead.

As for Amazon having influence on publishers -- they don't have as much as you imagine they do. That's been proven repeatedly, especially by the class action lawsuit that had to be filed against publishers for price fixing of ebooks.

It's not (I believe) a publisher by publisher decision - it's a book by book decision that the publisher makes. Not every book by a publisher is offered with text-to-speech - which is why you have to check the info areas for each book. And I don't think that Amazon has much (if any) pull with publishers - given that the publishers just lost a court case because of Amazon and their pricing practices. Just my opinion of course.

Encouraging Amazon on-going support of text-to-speech is my main point. Don't know how enabling is decided but I do know that I won't buy books that disable text-to-speech.

Publishers who also have audio book divisions have never allowed TTS.

But do whatever you need to do to be happy. Lots of people love TTS.
