New kindle KK freeze up issues

I got a repacement kindle KK delivered yesterday. A nurse in the hospital knocked my kindle onto the floor and broke the screen. Amazon got me a me a one in about 12 hours. Which was wonderful of them. Got about 90 books put on the new kindle last night and when I went to put them into collection I got one collection done and it froze up. A restart didn't do a thing except turn on the green power light at the bottom. I put it aside and about 45 minutes later it restarted on its own. I tried collections again with the same results. The next time I scrolled through books and it froze at about halfway through the list of books

When I try the restart nothing happens for close to an hour. It's very odd. I do occasionally get a flicker at the power button which I haven't seen before. I've had it plugged into the wall and into my comport and not plugged in at all when I've tried things. There's nothing that needs indexing. I'm out of ideas and looking for new ones.

Sounds like "you" dropped that one too...perhaps if you were a bit more careful you'd have fewer problems...as it is you're likely to be forever having problems with technology and may want to stick to regular books that you can drop all you like and they'll still be readable...

Just checking, but does your restart consist of pressing and holding the sleep button for at least 20 (preferably 30) seconds? Turning it off and back on does not constitute a restart.

I'm asking because that has confused others in the past and it would seem that a true hard restart might be the solution to you problem. If that doesn't/didn't work, then I would contact Kindle CS again. Replacement Kindles have a warranty as do the new ones. Your replacement should be under warranty until the end of your original warranty period or 90 days - whichever is longer.

Why would you think I dropped it based on what I said? I certainly haven't dropped it and generally don't have trouble with technology. I've had kindles for years

Thanks Hombre. Im sure I've done a true restart on it. Looking at it a little further I think it may be a power issue at the root of my problem. The on/off switch is sort of loose and doesn't really snap back when released--you know how it usually has a little tension on it?

I think it's about CS time just thought I'd look for some suggestions before I went that route. Heck I've had the replacement for only about 12 hours!

If you just downloaded 90 books the Kindle is busy indexing those books. You need to just let it be for a day or so. If you get a replacement, just download a few books a day not so many at one time.

Like Pat said you could have books still indexing. To check this from your Home page just type in some nonsense word like zzzrdw as an example. It should come back with nothing found. It should also show any books indexing. If you cannot do this because of the Kindle freezing up then I would recommend doing a factory reset on it and then reregister it. Then when you add books do not add more than 20 or so at a time and make sure they are indexed before adding more.

If you think that the switch might be a problem, then one thing that you can try is to clean the switch. The on/off switch has a small spring-like piece that allows it to snap back into place. A very small piece of grit can cause that spring to function poorly. If you have access to a bottle of compressed air, then spraying it in the area around the switch may help. I had that exact issue with my KK (the on/off switch sticking) and the compressed air and working the switch fixed it.

Kind of a shot in the dark, but maybe worth a try.

One other thing Dottiebears are you by chance using the old Kindle non-lighted cover that attaches at the side by the hinges? If so remove it. They had problems with those.

Dottiebears, any chance you have a non-lighted Amazon cover on that KK?

I'm sure it's not indexing anything, I checked that. I thought perhaps the cover was an issue for a while since it happened the first time when I snapped it in the cover (which is a lighted one not an unlighted one) but it continued to happen after I removed it.

I have not tried deregistering and reregistering it. I'll try that too

Will report back on my experiments results!

Unfortunately it didn't solve my problem, nor did deregistering and reregistering my kindle help. I'm still having the freezing/rebooting problem so I'm off to call CS.

Thank you all very much for the suggestions you sent. I tried every single one of them (except for Fuds). I appreciate the time you all took to send them.
