I am looking for a gift that can be used for downloading and reading books, but NOT able to download apps that will allow texting or surfing the internet. Is the Paperwhite the answer?

I've read the specs on it but am a bit unclear as to what "Apps" will and will not work on this device. I've searched the forum but have not found definitive answers to these questions.

If the parental controls are set to restrict anything but books, is there anyway it can be worked around or what I've heard called "Jailbreak" it?

Am I correct in my understanding that once parental controls are set they can not be circumvented by anyone but the parent and if reset the device will not work until the parent calls Amazon?

Thank you for any and all help on this matter and patience with me!

Lisa

The user guide says:

Parental Controls: Lets you restrict access to the Experimental Web Browser, Kindle
Store, and the Cloud. Parents may use this feature to prevent children from purchasing
content or using the web browser without their permission. You will be prompted to
enter a password when you set up restrictions for one of these areas. Note that this
password will be required to make changes to settings within Parental Controls. When
Parental Controls are enabled you will see a lock icon at the top of the screen next
to the Wi-Fi/Cellular status indicator, and Deregistration and Reset Device settings
will be disabled.

Anything can be defeated if you have enough skill, equipment and no how. I do think, however, that the parental controls will be secure enough for most children unless they are very very technically advanced and very determined. I don't know YOUR child though so you will have to be the ultimate Judge.

Lisa - You've gotten answers about the parental controls. I will just add that the "apps" available to the eInk Kindles are not the same as the apps on the Kindle Fire or other tablets. On the eInk Kindles it's call "active content" and mostly they are word games.

Thank you all,

I had read the parental control information but needed to be certain I wasn't missing anything. My concern is the device being used for other things other than downloading and reading books. She loves to read and would benefit by having a Kindle. I know there are many other choices out there but her stepmom and I have Kindle Fires and we can share books this way.

The app answer is much appreciated, I'm not buying this for her to play games and such on. If the "Apps" are only things such as word games there should not be a probem with that. There are other times and places for that as her internet usage is in an open area of the house and is monitored. Having a Kindle of her own may be the best thing for her for Christmas!

Thank you once again,
Lisa

As long as you don't let her read the Twilight books, you're an okay parent in my book.
