Confused about Kindle Unlimited - audio books

I am confused about the Kindle Unlimited and whether it includes audio books or not. From the description it sure sounds like lots of audio books ARE included in the membership. But then it states that a 3 month complementary subscription is given upon signing up. Can someone clarify whether Kindle Unlimited does in fact include audio books? I am not interested in also paying for an Audible membership.

Also, assuming audio books are included, is it streaming only or can you download them to your device?

Thanks for any help understanding.

There are 600,000 Kindle books in Kindle Unlimited. Of those, about 2,500 have companion Audible books.

You have to download a book to read or listen to it. You can't "stream" books.

I thought the same thing but I just tried to get the audio for a kindle unlimited book. It took me to a page where the audio can be purchased (albeit discounted) and not free. Either the sales pitch needs to be clarified or the interface doesn't work correctly, but I'd like a definitive answer to the question as to whether the audio version is free with subscription or not.

Did you borrow the Kindle book first?

What are benefits to existing Audible members to signing on. Is the monthly Audible fee waived for 3 months?

Richard - you get 3 audible credits if you are already a member

You will not get the 3 Audible credits up front. You get one, and then each additional month you get another, until you have 3 total.

So from what I am seeing, you don't get the audible version of the free reading books without paying for it? So why would I switch from audible to Amazon unlimited?

on the approximately 2500 books that have free audio as well as the ebook ....... it does not include the whole catalog at Audible.

If the book has free audio to go with it ... it will be noted on the product page.

ETA: Why would they offer unlimited for $9.99 a month to get you away from being an audible member paying $15 a month for one credit? that would be a poor business plan for AMazon.

ETA: An additional thought is === without the KU you would be buying the book and the audible ... with KU (for books where narration isn't included) you still get the discount on the audible as though you had purchased the book. The book you must return but the audible is yours.

not all of the books in KU have the audiobook available

only those that do can you get for free - there is a notation on those that has "with narration" next to the kindle unlimited info

Some of them you do get the audio free with the ebook. I don't think it would be cost effective to replace Audible with Kindle Unlimited. Unlimited is IN ADDITION TO Audible in my oopinion.

You only get the audio book with the Kindle book if the book is set up for Whispersync for Voice. Otherwise even if there is an Audible edition of the book it is not included in the free KU program.

Here's the current list, as of today, of KU books that have Whispersync for Voice professional narration included, a total of 7,334: http://smile.amazon.com/s/ref=lp_9069934011_nr_p_n_feature_three_br_0?rh=n%3A133140011%2Cn%3A%21133143011%2Cn%3A%21251259011%2Cn%3A9069934011%2Cp_n_feature_three_browse-bin%3A6577679011&bbn=9069934011&ie=UTF8&qid=1406043624&rnid=6577509011

The Audible catalog has over 150,000 audio books or about 20 times more than those available through KU.

All, I really have to sound dumb, but I still don't understand. Do I have to subscribe to Audible to listen to the narration?

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 22, 2014 9:07:39 AM PDT
No. I don't have an Audible subscription but I do have a few Audible books. So I have an account with Audible but not a subscription. I don't pay any monthly fees to Audible.

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 22, 2014 9:11:03 AM PDT
No, professional narration (Whispersync for Voice) is included for the KU books that have it (7,334 books). See my link, above.

Audible membership gives you access to their full catalog (150,000+ books).

no you don't but when you join you receive free credits to use at Audible in addition to those available for free from KU. You get one a month for up to 3 months you are a member. SO, you can use those credits to buy other audibles not included in KU

yes. and then through the kindle app while in the book, opened the menu and selected "Upgrade with Audio" which is the only menu item mentioning it. On the subsequent page is the orange "Buy with 1-click $x.xx" and no indication of free with subscription.

It may be worth noting that with the KU trial, the Audible free trial of 3 credits is given to those who already have an Audible membership too. It is given at 1 per month for 3 months, so KU needs to be paid for 2 months after free trial to fully take advantage of the Audible "free" trial, for current Audible members.

Some things I learned from Audible CS - this 3 month trial included with KU does NOT auto renew if you already have a membership -nice :). I was able to put my regular Audible membership on hold for 3 months, enabling me to keep any unused credits from my account intact. So after the one month trial of KU, if I chose to keep KU for another 2 months at $9.99/month, I also receive 2 audible credits as a bonus. $20 for 3 credits over 3 months, plus KU. Instead of my $14.99/month ($45) for 3 Audible credits that I would normally receive with membership over 3 months.

Makes the 1 month trial of KU -and paying for an extra 2 months besides, worth it for me, for Audible alone. After 3 months I'll reevaluate both.

not all books in KU have the free narration, so maybe you are clicking on one that doesn't...

"Kindle Unlimited Audiobooks
If your Kindle Unlimited book includes a free audiobook companion, you will automatically receive access.

You can listen to Kindle Unlimited audiobooks on most Kindle Devices and some free Kindle reading apps. Please go to the Audible Whispersync for Voice help page (http://www.amazon.com/gp/audible/wsv/start/display.html/) for more information on which devices are capable and for directions to switch between reading and listening to audiobooks.

Kindle Unlimited titles that have a free Whispersync for Voice (audiobook) upgrade will display a "with narration" icon:

You can also browse for Kindle Unlimited Whispersync for Voice upgrades on the Amazon website (https://www.amazon.com/b/ref=amb_link_422999562_4?ie=UTF8&node=9630682011).

Note: Some Kindle Unlimited books have Whispersync for Voice upgrades that are not free. Only titles that include "with narration" are free."

This is also true for new members as well. Per the terms and conditions on Audible's website for the offer new members also have to maintain an active KU membership through the entire 3 months and it does not auto renew after the 3 months is up. Basically for both new and current audible members it's 1 free audible credit per month for the first 3 months of your KU membership.

I just tried another KU book with whisper sync. Instead of "Upgrade to audio" it lists "Switch to audio". So apparently SOME books that have whispersync available have free audio and some (most likely most) do not.
James R. Scarborough in this thread has helpfully provided a link.

It is still in its infancy but I see that there may yet be value in having both audible and KU subscriptions depending on how voracious your reading/listening is and the availability of your preferred book titles. With KU it is at least possible to get a healthy discount on the audio. For example, the book I first tried had the audio available for $1.99 which is cheaper than using up an audible credit by a large margin and the credit can be saved for a more expensive title unavailable through KU. My complaint is that it is not immediately obvious at all when a specific book has audio included for free or not; e.g. "whisper-sync ready" is not an indicator. And browsing the list of 7k+ items that have free audio is not a reasonable substitute for getting at this information.

I started a Kindle Unlimited wishlist and noted for each title whether Audible was free or discounted price.
