Kindle Paperwhite problem

I bought the Paperwhite after being assured here I would have no problem copying a book to the Paperwhite that I had purchased from Amazon and downloaded to my PC. Yes, it's easy to copy the book over to the document directory however I can't read it! When I try to open the book it tells me it's "licensed to a different user". The searches I have done here seem to relate to other versions of the Kindle and many are old postings and do not apply to the Paperwhite or apply to the Fire or something else. I have no problem opening books on my 17' screen laptop however I don't want to lug it around with me just so I read a book. That's why I bought the Paperwhite. I don't have access to WIFI without traveling some distance. Please advise.

You cannot just copy over the books you have downloaded for the Kindle for PC app - I assume this is what you have been trying to do, by the sound of that message.

Go to Manage Your Kindle on your computer and from the Actions menu next to the book you wish to read, choose Download and Transfer via USB. Then make sure your Kindle Paperwhite is chosen in the dropdown menu. Download the file to your computer and copy it over to the Paperwhite's Documents folder. This file should be readable on the Paperwhite, as it's customised for that device.

Most books are protected by DRM, so with the way Amazon's DRM works, every copy is device-specific - a copy you've read on Kindle for PC won't work on a Kindle device or another Kindle app, so you just have to download a copy specific to the device you want to read it on.

Thanks for your prompt response. That fixes it for me. Thanks again.

And for future reference, it's better to start a new thread--use the Ask a New Question tab--than to add onto an old thread about a completely different problem.
