Okay, so I just got my Paperwhite a couple hours ago...added my insane amount of books (mostly .mobi files)....and they aren't indexing. I'm not reading or messing with it, it's just sitting there....not indexing.

I did the same drag and drop to the documents folder I've been doing on all my Kindles....did I do something wrong, or is my unit defective?

**Meya** says:
How many books did you load? Doing more than 20 or so at a time is asking for trouble.

Hah, yeah, I may have been a little IS indexing, but very slowly. I think I will let it sit overnight...plugged in, of course >_<.

A Customer says:
<<People will never learn.... >>

What is there to learn? The product page on Amazon declares:
"Holds over 1,000 books - take your library wherever you go"

Why would anybody keep it to <= 20 books?

JES says:
You shouldn't transfer all your ebooks to your kindle at one time. The ebooks need time to index.

A Customer - Meya isn't saying you can only load 20 books period. She's saying load 20 books, let them index, load 20 more, let them index, etc.

I added about 100 books all at once, and all but two of them indexed just fine over a period of a few hours. But, these last two are not indexing and I'm wondering if there is a way to force them? It seems like that could be done on prior models, but I'm not seeing a way. Any ideas?

Delete them and re-download them - sometimes they just get stuck

How do you tell it's still indexing?

Jazzy_Jeff says:
That is 20 books at a time until they are indexed. The more you overload any system the more problems you will have. But you don't have to take my advice.

Cyndie says:
Do a search for something non-sensical like fjdsalald. It will come back and tell you that it can't find that also tell you how many, if any, books are still indexing.

John D says:
This is my fourth Kindle and I've never realized this. I think I've only used search about three times, so I wouldn't care except for the negative impact stuck searching is said to have on battery life.

Thanks, Cyndie!

So mine seems to have done fine. The search test doesn't complain that indexing is incomplete. But how can you tell if some didn't index at all?

They will still show as not indexed. It's a list of books indexing and awaiting indexing, as only one book at a time gets indexed.

Posted on Jun 8, 2014 9:24:55 PM PDT
A) There should be some means of saying "please index this book".

B) If indexing is not currently in progress, there should be a means of saying "insure that the index information is up-to-date".

C) If loading 500 books at a time causes problems, such as indexing to become "stuck", the firmware needs to be corrected to fix this bug.

CBRetriever says:
A. All books have to index so there's no need to tell the kindle to do it
B. the search for a nonsense word does it
C. I did 200 at once with no problems - we just tend to err on the side of caution and one update on one of my kindles caused all 200 books to re-index which took almost 8 hours and came close to depleting my battery

D. most people never have any problems with it or need to know how to see if they have a book stuck indexing - it's an invisible process and we usually only tell people to check if there's a sudden change in battery life andor the search function isn't working in a book and both of those are fairly rare

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 9, 2014 1:11:52 AM PDT
I've done more than 500 at once... but I know enough to make sure that during that process I have it charging constantly, and to leave the Kindle alone as much as possible... Not a single problem...

My old Kindle Keyboard had issues with search/find and after four years of being told to reload, hit on off. etc. from Customer Service bought a new Paperwhite. I added the Bible: New American Bible Revised, 2011. The search feature does not work, it will not index. I have deleted and reloaded numerous times and still no joy. My battery is fully charged so there should not be a problem. Do you have any suggestions?

CBRetriever says:
I believe someone once said that that bible takes over 18 hours to index

Jazzy_Jeff says:
Give it time to index. My Bible took over 12 hours. The bigger the book the longer it takes.

CBRetriever says:
have you:

1. done a reboot by holding the power button in for a full 30 seconds?
2. checked to see which book is stuck indexing? You might be adding and removing the wrong books
3. made sure your kindle isn't full?

The Paperwhite is less than 30 days old. Nothing is 'stuck'. There are only 42 books on the device. Battery is fully charged...and the book has been loaded and reloaded several times.
