Does the Kindle Fire have SWYP Input?

I have a great need for constant note taking -- it is the main reason why I carry my iPad everywhere -- but I would dump my iPad in a heartbeat if this sturdy, 7-inch device from Amazon runs Evernote and has SWYPE input.

My android phone has a SWYPE virtual keyboard, and while it took me some time to get proficient, the SWYPE keyboard input method on my mobile phone is MUCH faster for me than tapping out on the horrendous iPad virtual keyboards.

Does anyone know if the Kindle Fire has SWYPE?

Waaaay too soon to tell. Evernote is in the Az app store; Swype is not, but I strongly suspect the Android development community will have a root solution for the Kindle Fire in short order, and at that point you might be able to install anything you want to on it -- if you are comfortable rooting.

I've never rooted a device before, but for SWYPE I could get comfortable with it! ;-)

I am trying to think if there is anything I would miss about my iPad 2 if I were to replace it with a Kindle Fire...

Facetime is great, but then again I have a Macbook air with a video camera, Mic and Facetime (not to mention Facetime is on my desktop Mac as well).

In reality, my iPad isn't that much smaller than my Macbook Air, and because it is such a cumbersome input device, I find myself bringing my MacBook Air instead of the iPad anyway.

The small form factor of the Kindle Fire is another matter though. That is dramatically more portable than my ultra slim laptop and could be note taking nirvana for me.

I sure wish the Fire had 4G though. I guess I can look stuff up from my android phone if I have to, but it would be a lot nicer for my note taking device to be able to do that as well, you know?

Can we confirm that it has at least a virtual keyboard as nothing in the specs or ad shows

Yeah .... same question. No mention of virtual keyboard anywhere.

It's an android device, people. Nearly everything (except hardware-limited stuff like camera and bluetooth) that you can do with your android phone, you'll be able to do here.

I would be bereft without Garage Band. But I hear you about the SWYPE thing.

Yes, there is a virtual keyboard. If you watch the video on the product page, you'll see it briefly right near the beginning.

I think they don't mention it because of offering email, it's sort of a given.

Actually, I got rid my iPad and got a Samsung Galaxy Tab for better portability and SWYPE. I have found it much better for work use while I admit the iPad is superior for show and tell with others and entertainment.

For 4G, consider getting a Sprint 4G Hotspot. I use this as my 4G wifi connection for all my devices from laptop to netbook to Galaxy Tablet, and even Apple iTouch when I need to see Apple Apps. It also allows my family members to connect also when they are with me.

At least one reviewer reported the Fire is not locked down, so although you can't directly load SWYPE from the Android Market, if you have it on another Android device it should be pretty easy to sideload.

J. Milleker says:
Installing Swype from APK (and registering for a Beta account) doesn't work. After the download it sends you to the keyboard settings menu to enable Swype.. The only problem, the menu item is not there.

I love the Fire, well worth the price even if I couldn't sideload and root the device. But I'm hungry and want an Ice Cream Sandwich. Let's see how far we can push this thing. I may even be buying another or two for use around the house.

I love my Kindle Fire... but I definitely miss Swype on it and would download it in a heartbeat. Hopefully Amazon will take the hint and make it available for it. It's hard to go back to tapping after using my Swype keyboard for so long.

I agree. Very bummed that I can't SWYPE on my KFire.

Posted on Nov 16, 2011 11:25:32 AM PST
Double bummed. I'm pretty confident there will be a way soon. I think a lot of the app developers are just starting to code for the Fire, so we should see a whole bunch of new apps in the weeks to come.

Just want to make sure that everyone realizes--you do NOT have to root the Fire to install apps from somewhere besides the Amazon app store. I don't know how to do it (I've only had my Fire for about 2 hours) but I did see the option where you can "Allow Installation of Applications from Unknown Sources" (On/Off). Also one of the tech reviews (forgot which) said they were able to do so.

Guys, we could install any apk android apps by simply download them directly from the webs sites offer download sources. (you got go to setting and click on the setting to allow the device to install unknow apps) However, so far we can not do nothing on the keyboard input method with kindle fire. The system setting does not support the users to add or change the input style.. Root is probably the only way to get it work... Just wait for it.. Overall, I think kindle is a great device with fair price..

Yea just sideloaded another keyboard and even though input method is there you can't activate the new keyboard....too bad but hopefully we can get that changed. I use thumbs keyboard on my xoom as swype is harder for me there but I can see it being great on the fire.

Hi...from Amazon apps you can get Flex T9. It uses a similar technology to Skype. But check out the reviews. Many people (including myself) consider to more accurate than Swype. And just so you know, Flex T9 is owned by folks who brought you Dragon speech recognition. They have recently acquired Swype. So in a way, getting Flex T9 is like getting Swype...only better.

Johann says:
Sounds good, but apparently Flex T9 has not been written for the Fire; it doesn't show up in an app search.
