Kathy S. says:
Sometimes the text-to-speech on my K3 goes haywire and skips a few pages. If I do a restart, it corrects the problem for a few days, and then it does it again eventually. So I can work around it, but I was just wondering if others are having the same problem. Mainly I wanted to put it out there and create a record of comments for Amazon so that they might take notice and fix it with a software upgrade or in the next generation.

So, if you are having this problem, please post so that Amazon can get an idea how widespread it is.

Have you called CS on this problem?

I havent used this option on my K2 or the K3 but I also havent heard anyone having this problem.

Let us know what you found out.

Kathy S. says:
No, I haven't called CS on this one, since it always fixes it for a while when I restart.

I have also had this same problem with my K2. I don't necessarily restart it, I just stop the text to speech and page back and start it again. Sometimes after a few more chapters it will do it again but then sometimes I can get thru a whole book w/o any problems.

I have precisely the same experience as Linda, but with my DXUS. When I back up, I sometimes read to the bottom of that page and restart TTS at the top of the next page, but I have just restarted TTS at the top of the page where the skip occurred and had no problem on the repeat read-through.

Not only did I have this problem. I even had to exchange two of my Kindles only to have the same problem. I didn't run into the problem until they updated the software to 2.5.6. I listen to my kindle at work and while I drive. I hate when I have to miss portions of my book while I am driving. The last time I have spoken to Tech Support I was told to restart the Kindle from the menu. I do this at least three times a week. I wish they fix this problem.

I have a K-2 and I also have the problem of skipping pages. I did not have this issue until I upgraded to the newest software. This is a big issue since I also listen to my Kindle in the car. Not like you stop tts and back up pages until you get to correct location while driving down the interstate.

I've had this happen multiple times with my K2. Kindle Tech Support recommended a restart, which I do when it happens. It's kind of a hassle though because I'm usually in the car driving when it skips. I wish they'd get this issue figured out.

K. C. Vogel says:
I listen to many of my books and it has happened often. I just find my way back to where I was and start again. Much quicker than restarting and then still having to find where I was in the book. It has happened on free and paid books. New and old. But it isn't often enough to be more than a minor inconvenience especially since I have the option of reading it myself. I only wish I could get my K2 to stop talking the minute I fall asleep. It doesn't seem to notice I'm not paying attention. Guess it can't wait to get to the end.

Count me among those who have this problem. It didn't start until after I upgraded to 2.5x. CS seems to be treating it as a hardware issue, but I don't see how it could be as I never had this problem prior to the s/w upgrade.

My Kindle 2 is exhibiting this too. Support replaced my original one but the new one is doing it too. They've put in a trouble ticket with engineering for me. Hopefully we'll see another update to address this.

I have had my K2 over a year and a half. I don't know when it started with the skipping problem, but it certainly didn't have it for the first 9 months to 1 year. Hopefully it's just a software or OS problem. From what other people have been saying on this thread, it sounds like a software issue. Since TTS is my primary method of reading books, it is more than just an annoyance. As a matter of fact, if Amazon doesn't figure out this problem soon, I'm going to switch over to using my iPad for ebooks.

I recently have encountered the skipping problem too. If I wasn't watching the words as it was reading to me I might not have realized it had skipped a few pages.

This speculation has been discounted by two first-person accounts in the next two posts to this thread. I will not continue to promulgate this theory! Worry!

I have read (somewhere) that it is to do with the speakers getting hot, and that earbuds, external speaker, or an AUX cable/device that lets the Kindle play through your car speakers will remedy the problem. BUT IT'S NOT TRUE!

I do not use TTS or audio books, so this is not my own experience, just second-hand WRONG advice.

I'm pretty sure I've had it happen when playing through the car radio. Earlier in its life, possibly before the 2.5 update, it didn't skip, but it would get all confused and do a spontaneous reboot, or lock up and make me do a hard restart.

I am just reporting that this happens to me on my US DX. Mostly with .mobi files. I am running the 2.5.7 firmware. It happens when I am holding the device on the train and when in bed. It does not seem to happen when the unit is untouched on my night stand. I would like to discount the overheating speakers theory, I only ever use Apple ear buds, never the internal speaker.

I have experienced the same problem. It used to only happen occasionally but has been happening more frequently.

I have a K2 (f/w rev 2.5.8) and it has had this problem since new.
Recently it skipped *backwards* 3~5 pages. This happened twice over a 12 hour drive.
This is the first I've had this happen so I can't tell if it will recur.

I have been unable to reproduce the page skip problem (either direction).
When I retrace to the pre-skip location and re-start, text to speech works fine.

Any updates on this issue? My K2 seems to be having this issue more and more and I almost exclusively use it in text-to-speech mode - always with headphones or through car stereo. It is getting really annoying.

BUMP. Any news? I just started using my Kindle again and it's getting on my nerves. Halfway through a small book it has happened almost 10 times.

I have this problem with my K2 once in awhile -- but nothing like 10 times in a small book! Wish they would do something about it, but if it's mostly a K2 problem I doubt they will...

I got ahold of Amazon support and they tried a software update which didn't work. They then offered to replace it with a new one - I paid $60 to upgrade since the Gen. 2 was no longer available. I've had it for awhile now without a single problem. The person I spoke to didn't seem shocked by this issue so it must be a known problem.

I have this problem with my K3 using 2.5.6.

It was reading a New York Times article, and moved on to
the next article. It seemed to me that the article hadn't
explored the topic as fully as I would expect, so I stopped it
and took a look. It had skipped four pages.

I restarted from the beginning and this time it worked ok.

I have listened to one book via text to speech,
but now I worry how much to trust it. Maybe I missed
some interesting bits. It's not necessarily easy to tell
if a skip has happened.

I chatted with support about this today. It has been over a year since I last contacted them about this problem. They suggested that I update to 2.5.8 to see if that fixes the problem. We will see...
