I own a Kindle Touch and I am looking at purchasing either the basic $69 Kindle or the paperwhite as a gift for a teenager. Does the basic show book covers like the Touch or just show the titles in a list like the Touch use to? Is it easy to navigate on the basic to purchase books or look words up in the dictionary? The teen I am thinking of buying this for says the basic is fine but he has never owned a Kindle and I want to make sure I get one that he will continue to use because of ease of use. He has used my Touch on a few occasions and he reads quite a bit.

If he is okay with the Touch, I would go with the Paperwhite because of the built in light. The 2nd generation ones are great.

A paperwhite he will be able to read in the sunlight. My kindle fire isn't good in the sunlight. I don't know about the Basic in sunlight.

The basic is e-ink like the Paperwhite. It will be fine in the sun but you need an external light in the dark (just like a book, so no big deal).

The paperwhite does show book covers.

Does the basic show book covers? I can't seem to find the answer to this on the website.

No, only the Touch and the Paperwhite show the books covers. I personally have a Basic Kindle and love it. I just use a lamp to read at night. You can't go wrong with either one.

I have the basic kindle and the paperwhite 2nd gen. The basic kindle has the best screen for reading as long as you have good lighting, but the 4 way controller is cumbersome, especially for looking up words. It only shows books as a list. The pw2 is a breeze to navigate and has a beautiful buildt in light, but the black text is not as dark, bold or sharp as the basic kindle. I would recommend the pw2 as he is familiar with the touch only.
