The stock web browser that comes installed on the Kindle Fire called "Silk" is a fair browser, but has quite a few complaints. If you search throughout the Kindle Forum and Kindle Fire Forum you will see the multitude of problems with Silk. I'm sure in the future Amazon will improve it. In the mean time I suggest people try an alternate browser to solve some of the problems they encounter. I have used a browser that is available in the Amazon App store called Maxthon Mobile Web Browser. It is free so the price is right and you don't need to sideload it.

Maxthon Mobile Web Browser

Maxthon also has a web browser for pc available on the net for free. I like the fact that I can sync my bookmarks between the Mobile and Desktop versions. (you must set up an account which you can do within the Mobile version, which I recommend, so you can store your favorites online) You can also setup folders for your favorites so they are organized just like the big boy browsers. I didn't like that when I cleared the "data" in Silk that I lost all my bookmarks. The data file in Silk was also growing in size, which uses valuable space on the Fire.

There are settings that you can try and play around with. It has gestures (draw a symbol on screen to have browser do something-if you move your finger on the screen and see a yellow tail that is a gesture) you might want to disable in settings until you understand them more.

Read thru the reviews and you will see the Maxthon Browser has very high marks.

Many have sideloaded or downloaded browser apps off the web that are not available on the App store for the Kindle Fire. One of the best is Dolphin HD ver 8.0, but needs a couple of steps to install it on the KF. I encourage those users to post here and describe to others their experiences. Post any questions. I am not an expert but have used the Maxthon browser for months and really enjoy it

They finally gave you the badge! I'm delighted as you and Andrys have deserved as much or more then any one here. And as for insight on the Kindles, you are both among the best. Congrats!

Dolphin HD Browser 8.0 is also an excellent browser. It's not available at the Amazon app store, but you can get it from by first downloading their app and then downloading it to the Fire via the GetJar app on the Fire.

I had to actually d/l the Dolphin HD 7.5 from and then go to to get the update. Unless of course Getjar now has the Dolphin HD v 8.0

I didn't like losing all my bookmarks in the Silk browser when I cleared the data to free up space and get the tab thing refreshed. Maxthon I can save and sync my bookmarks online so if I have to reset it I just log on and sync and all my bookmarks are back and ready to go.

And you can sync your favorites. I am waiting for the Maxthon browser for ios. When that happens I can sync my PC browser, KF and Apple bookmarks.

Anyone interested in Dolphin HD, here is a link to a FAQ

I want to comment that after several months of fooling around, I FINALLY got the Dolphin HD browser to load. The problem was, it was not offered on (just the skins for it). So I tried to install GETJAR and the download button on the web page WOULD NOT RESPOND. Took me about ten times to mash it and it finally downloaded the GETJAR apk. Once I installed the GETJAR app, I could find Dolphin HD, but again, the download button in that APP would refuse to respond, until I mashed it about fifteen times. Several times I got an error message that told me to try again later. I think they may be "tricking" these free app websites to frustrate you from getting the stuff, honestly!

Now after a few days of using Dolphin HD, I'm not so thrilled with it. First of all, it hangs up just like Silk on certain IMDB seldom loads (the desktop version of the website, not the mobile). It hangs up on DIFFERENT websites than Silk, but still is annoying that way.

SILK now has this nice thing that de-clutters websites and presents them to you in book mode. I have begun to like that feature A LOT. It's not offered in Dolphin HD that I can see.

Neither browser can display a YouTube video with the audio and video in sync, though. ARRRGGGGH. Thus to watch a YouTube, I generally use the FREEDI YouTube download app in the Amazon store. I do not understand why that app can play them flawlessly whereas none of the browsers can!

SILK is also a bit faster than Dolphin HD, at least for sites I go to! That surprised me.

I would become a traitor to my people, though, if someone could provide an AD BLOCKER that worked.

The number of ads that come up telling me I won iPads and gift certificates, etc, etc, and the number of surveys, is enough to completely spoil my browsing experience with the KF. Especially since those pages go into the Carousel.

Result is I don't use the KF much for general browsing. Combine that with the stupid keyboard, and I might as well use my cheap cellphone to browse the web, the one with the 0-9 keypad only. Gaaahhhh, doesn't anybody think about USABILITY these days?

I completely disagree with your post. I have used Maxthon for 5 months and have never experienced what you claim. Dolphin HD also does not have the problems you profess. I suggest you continue to use your cell phone so you are happy.

Your internet bandwidth/download speed (ISP service package you pay for each month) would have a big influence on the audio being in sync with the video.

I watch YouTube video frequently on my Fire and have no problems at all with the audio syncing with the video.

Using Maxthon and Dolphin, they both play YouTube videos equally as well as the Silk browser.

I will add that I like how the Silk browser utilizes the movie player on the Fire to play the online YouTube videos. A nice feature.

I use the default Silk browser for almost everything (though Dolphin is also very nice). I also really like the 'article' mode for the Silk browser now. A nice improvement.

Dolphin HD has an setting for block popup window. Maxthon does not have a setting that I know of. I have not had a problem with them in Maxthon. Have you?

I quite like the copy paste process. Much more intuitive. Wondering why I fought w silk so long.

Plan on reviewing this soon. Want more experience w it first to give as good a review as possible. But so far? Love. Here's to no zombie tabs!

I've used (briefly) the Dolphin HD browser, but not Maxthon. Silk has seriously improved with every update, so I mostly just use Silk.

Use whatever your happy and content with. Silk has gotten better I admit since it first started. I like Maxthon better than Dolphin. Others like Dolphin better. I just got use to Maxthon. There are settings in it I really like. You have to experiment with them. I really like dealing with bookmarks and the ability to make folders. Just have to get use to them. You can store locally or sync to you Maxthon account.

Thanks Q, at least you are not a Dolphin fanboi. By the way, I have been a computer programmer (now retired) since 1968. I have 30 MBPS cable service here and a router that's about a month old, so it's not that which is contributing to the YouTube "out of sync" problems, and if you check the forums here, I have DOZENS of companions in misery on that topic. Videos once did play OK, but that was like two firmware updates ago. Other embedded video is much worse, however there are apps out there like NBC Nightly News which play just fine. Also, my browser DOES NOT offer me the option to use the movie player to watch the videos. It just uses FLASH or whatever. The fact is, the way Amazon does things, they force you to use an OLD version of FLASH, which is baked into the firmware, instead of allowing you to update it regularly, sigh.

Anyhow, truly, watching online video on the web is not a huge part of what I do with the tablet. It is the one most glaring problem, IMHO. It ought not to do this, even if it's maybe 5% of owners affected.

So it's not my crummy DSL service, or being a newbie, that's contributing to this, it's a real problem!

Compared to a mature platform like a PC, this tablet is a half baked hunk of junk with a jillion problems, really. However the "done bits" are quite nice and tasty.

And now that I have no less than FOUR app "stores" out there, it's pretty apparent the average app is updated as frequently as every four or five DAYS. Naturally, it won't LET me update them (like, the Amazon MP3 player!) because it has to go to the Google app store to download the APK, and that doesn't work...or the APK itself won't parse correctly once it's downloaded and won't install because Amazon has "tricked up" the thing to disallow the update.

What a zoo, really! You can't put on the latest AMAZON MP3 app because the one that's there (and old, and misfunctioning), is baked in and you can't touch it.

Nevertheless, since I slapped on Dolphin and Go Launcher EX and done a few rounds of app updates, it's like getting a brand new tablet and more and more of it is working predictably. Nice toy!

Actually, I'm on a 6Mbps DSL connection and not experiencing problems with audio sync on the Fire .. unless I try to view sites like and watch any episode.

So, clearly, your cable connection is fast. That's not it.

I would then suggest the unthinkable (which I do after every update) ... reset the Fire back to factory defaults:
Gear wheel > More...> Device > Reset to Factory Defaults

BTW, before I do that, I:
* Go to and d/l their app. Then via that app, d/l & install "Backup Master"
* I use BM to backup my browser's bookmarks in a folder /BackupEverything
* I use ASTRO File Manager to backup my apps as APK's in a folder /Backup
* backup the entire FAT32 contents of the Fire to my HDD.
(all of this goes pretty fast once you have the apps)
Then after the reset, I:
* Turn on the Fire and resetup the WiFi and then register it
* Hook up the micro-USB and copy back /Books, /Documents, /Music, /Video and any other folder linked to an app (this part is the slowest as the Fire is sloooow on writes to its FAT32 partition)
* Then I install each app from the /Backup/Apps folder (goes quick via any file manager. I use the default Quickoffice/Browse feature)
* Lastly I have Backup Master restore Silk's browser bookmarks

... And the Fire is back to where it was, except I've found it to behave much better. Seems to go faster. Sort of like a house cleaning.

I can usually do all of the above in about 45 min (except for the copying over to the Fire the large amount of content. That I just plug it in and leave it until it's done).

Fairly painless for me and seems to help.

I was using dolphin until recently it stopped working. I uninstalled it and then tried to re install only to get a message that it is not comparable for the kindle. Now all I'm using my kindle for is to shop for a new tablet
