CatChat says:
the 1st gen fires have a history of the charge port coming loose. that old it is not under warranty. customer service will sometimes replace them up to 18 months old. but at 2 1/2 you need to either get the port soldered or buy a new kindle. check with local cell phone or electronics repair shops. there are easy to follow videos on youtube if they are unsure what needs to be done. there are some reputable shops advertising on ebay as well. do NOT take it to an electronics repair department like Best Buy.

Thank you. I'm not very computer savvy at 85 so will probably just get in touch by phone to Amazon and see what they say.

Good idea, Helen. They might offer a discount on a replacement.
