More and more often, when I turn on my Kindle Keyboard the screen is black about half way up. Do I need to reset or order a new one?

I'd definitely try a reboot by holding the power button for 30 seconds. If that doesn't help, contact Kindle customer service to troubleshoot. Start with the help link at the top of this page. If you need a new one, they might offer you a discount on a replacement.

This happens to me at least once a week. I just page forward and back and it clears itself. It's been going on for well over a year now with no ill affects. I have rebooted the Kindle but it still happens.

Thanks Mike for responding so quickly. I have done the reboot as you suggested. I guess I will just have to wait and see what happens. I would love an upgrade, but this one has been such a faithful friend, I hate to abandon it.

Interestingly enough, this just happened to my co-workers Kindle. I wonder if it's a software bug.

FoundQuilting, Thanks for your timely reply too! I have been doing exactly as you suggested for a while. I guess we will eventually know how long it will last when it does this. Thanks.

I have wondered that as well, FoundQuilting. I have also wondered if it's the battery on decline.

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 11, 2014 9:46:19 AM PDT
I never thought about the battery. Mine doesn't seem to be declining. I read a lot and use the TTS feature during my daily commute so I drain the battery pretty quickly. I charge her every 2 or 3 days.

Does your black box appear in the same place every time? Mine doesn't. It's also different sizes although it always spans the width of the screen.

I get a black section along the bottom half of my KK's screen occasionally. Paging forward or back doesn't always help, but if it doesn't, the display usually goes back to normal when I close the book and reopen it.

Suloo says:
My black box always appears on the bottom half of the page, it covers the entire half. I don't use mine as much as you do, FQ, but I use it daily.

flipoid, that's annoying. I had to do that, once. But it was just the one time.

The first few times, my first instinct is to run to my computer and place an order for a new one. I do have a friend who laid hers on the dashboard of her car and it went totally black and was never recovered. Perhaps too much light or too much heat? Although, she had hers laying on the A/C vent.

flipoid says:
Yes, too much heat probably caused the little ink bubbles to burst inside the device (at least, that's the way I understand e-ink to work). Putting electronics on car dashboards is never a good idea.

Which type of Kindle does your coworker have, FoundQuilting? I have a K2US, a KK, a Basic, and a Paoerwhite, and the only one that's ever had the large black area appear is the KK. I wonder if it is a KK-specific software bug.

Hers is a KK as is mine. It does seems to be a KK issue.

flipoid, interesting question. I don't know when I upgraded my software to 3.4, maybe that could be a problem. It has been acting this way for about a year. My Kindle will go for a long time without this occurring, but then it will do it for a couple weeks every time I turn it on, and then quit for a while.

I was just thinking, I bet the Alt+G would clear it like the page turn does. It always happens to me when the page is refreshing. It's as if the black flash gets stuck on part of the screen.

flipoid says:
Hm, I always forget about the Alt+G. If the black screen happens again. I'll have to remember to try it.

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 11, 2014 2:53:48 PM PDT
I had to look it up. lol

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 11, 2014 2:54:44 PM PDT
Of course now that we're armed with something new to try it probably won't happen.

patrinka says:
It's happened on my KK when I've accidentally hit two buttons at the same time, such as hitting the page forward and backward buttons together or the buttons on the 5 way controller. Usually hitting the back button fixes it but once I had to reboot.

Suloo says:
It only happens to me on opening.

I tried the Alt+G today. It didn't work.

Suloo says:
FoundQuilting, did you notice if you got the black screen by hitting two buttons at once; as patrinka described?

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 13, 2014 2:46:46 PM PDT
Yeasterday I think it happened when I woke the Kindle up, just slid the power button. I haven't really paid attention but I will start now.

Well, it is as I feared. My KK died, last night. I tried to turn it on and I got half of the log in box and half of the screen saver page, vertically. I tried to reboot it and I ended up with a bunch of lines running through the screen. I have tried to reboot several times since, and the screen just becomes a bigger and bigger mess. I will be holding a funeral this afternoon. My new PaperWhite should be here tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your KK. I hope you enjoy using your Paperwhite, though.
