Want to load pictures from digital camera flash cards directly into Fire via USB adapter. Can this be done?

Nope. You will have to transfer them to a computer then onto the Fire. The fire acts like a external hard drive when connected to the the computer, it cannot host any devices.

If you have one of the new WiFi cameras, where you don't need a cord to trasnfer photos, then it may work.
