Can an external keyboard be connected to the Kindle Fire using bluetooth or some other method? I'm looking at this for my 92 year old grandmother and if she wants to access her email it would be much easier for her to type on a regular keyboard.

There are some generic ones out there that might work. We will not know until the device is actually released and tested.

Are you sure you understand that the screen on the Fire is barely larger thab the screen on a Kindle? Make sure your gran will actually be able to see what she's typing before you buy her a 7" tablet.

In any case, no, the USB port on the Fire doesn't support external devices. It's like the one on a Kindle - there for charging and for data transfers with a computer. Or so I'm told, and it makes perfect sense.

And the Fire doesn't have Bluetooth, which it the usual way tablets support external keyboards.

The Kindle fire is "very hard" to type on. I have to redo it over and over to get it right. If you intend to type much of anything, you need something else. It is a great ereader, adjust the font to the size you need very easily. Easy reading. I don't think there is a stylus that will work with it either, and it needs one so badly.

J. Spotts says:
The Kindle Fire will not support an external keyboard; however, stylus that work for devices with a capacitive screen should function properly. Be aware that capacitive screens limit precision, but seeing as this isn't the only device with this set up. I'm sure you could look at other devices for demos of what the writing may be like on the Kindle Fire. FYI Amazon sells a couple different stylus for the Kindle Fire. Do a search and see if you find anything you like.

I use a stylus with my Kindle Fire. You just buy the ones that can be used with the Ipad.

I bought the cheapest stylus on amazon.com (less than $2 for a package of three with no shipping prime account) and they work perfectly They even work on my ipod touch

Currently there are no external keyboards for the FIRE. I have tried the one on Amazon and I asked Amazon about it. They told me " no" I am not sure when or IF an external keyboard will work. LISTEN UP AMAZON!

if you want to send feed back to amazon:
from your kindle fire: MENU > SETTINGS > HELP&FEEDBACK
dont post it here, amazon does not monitor these threads for product improvement ideas!

Let's tell amazon we'd pay extra for a kindle Fire with an external keyboard, or at least ts own physical keyboard rather than a touch screen. I'd pay double!

I will not buy a Kindle Fire until they add the ability to have an external keyboard to make it useable

Sure the Kindle fire can read stuff.....but last time I checked all tablets can read words. they can add them too, and thats where the fire is falling short. I only got one because my parents pitied me for my ipod getting stolen and thought this would help. and I thought I could type my school notes on it like I could on my ipod....well now Im twenty more bucks out of pocket. when is society going to realize that TOUCH SCREEN KEYBOARDS SUCK SO MUCH!!!!

On the Swype website you can download the Swype Beta. I don't have a Kindle Fire, but I see no reason it shouldn't work since the Kindle Fire supports apps from unknown sources. Swype emails you a link to download, and it installs just like a regular app.

Is there an external one available now? Or do you mean the Fire touch screen?

I got a stylus from Walmart that works fine with my Kindle Fire. It was only like 13 bucks too.
