I just received the New update about 20 minutes ago. After the update was one I tried to listen to music and sound only worked on one ear, I then put the headphones in a different device and they worked just fine. Any advice Amazon?

I'm not Amazon, but you aren't likely to hear from an official Amazon support rep on this forum. FWIW, I received the 7.3 update today on my 7" Kindle Fire HD, and my headphones work fine in both ears. You can contact Kindle support by clicking on the Help link at the top of this screen, scrolling down a bit, and clicking on the yellow Contact Us button at the right side of your screen.

ETA: I will never understand why people post questions here and then don't follow the discussion to see if there are any answers to their questions. Owell.

I had to exchange my kindle fire H.D. for a speaker problem under warranty.Headphones worked fine. Received a new Kindle 8.9- none of my headphones work, or the sound was so low you could hardly hear it. Exchanged it for another Kindle 8.9 - same problem- out out of the box. Tried one of my headphones on the kindle fire HD 7", I had bought for my secretary, -- headphones work fine. I am now going to receive my 4th kindle fire H.D.. This is ridiculous. Needless to say I am very frustrated. --

I am about to get my second Kindle Fire replacement because headphones haven't worked in the original or the replacement. I noticed that there are a lot of posts on the internet about problems with Kindle Fire and headphones. You would think Amazon would be more up front here, it's not going to help them to ignore the problem. Long term it could create a trust issue for customers, which in turn could hurt their sales.

I just read on another forum that the issue is the Kindle case. It blocks the full insertion of the headphone cable. I'm going to try the headset without the case as soon as I get home. Here's a copy and paste from the other forum:

I responded to 74Cuda's thread in another forum, which he probably hasn't read yet. But if he bought the Amazon case then that's probably his problem. I tried my expensive Grado earphones, and they didn't work, but my cheapo Apple earbuds did work. When I took the HD Fire out of its case, the plug was able to be inserted a little further and the Grado earphones worked just fine.

I read the posts and they were correct. I took my kindle out of the hard case and the headset worked. I put it back into the case and pushed hard enough to feel the click and it also worked in the case.

The case is the problem readjust the case so headphones can plug in all the way, that was my problem but these posts helped me

It's the case the head phones can't plug in all the way, adjust case and it works great. I was ready to send my kindle HDX back till I read the posts about the case being in the way. Thank god I checked posts first!!

I had a problem with no sound when I added earphones to my Kindle Fire HD. I read one of the suggestions in this forum, which was that the case might not allow complete insertion of the earphones jack into the Kindle. I took the case off and tried again.....perfect. I can still use the case, and will know what to do, if it happens again.

I have an open-ended wallet so my earphones fit fine but I'm only getting sound in one ear (the left) and have to turn the volume up to the max to hear anything, and its still fairly quiet. Given how long this has been going on for (judging from the many posts here and elsewhere) I'm surprised Amazon haven't sorted it by now.

Doc Dittie says:
Just because a 3.5 mm plug fits in a 3.5 mm jack doesn't mean they fit fine. Some have ridges in different places and you can't see that they're all making full contact. Whatever an open-ended wallet is, it's apparently not as relevant as the details you've omitted such as whether you've tried other headphones, whether the ones that don't work do work with other devices, whether the ones you're using are meant to be proprietary such as for iOS versus android versus those which are totally generic.

Amazon can't sort that which it is unaware of. We're not support here, just other customers. If you want Amazon to troubleshoot with you, you'll have to contact them and be prepared to tell them what you've tried and what, if anything, you've ruled out.

Half of my phones and buds work with my Kindle Fire HD. Plugs with a thin/narrow plastic or rubber covering for the first 1/8" beyond the 1.5 mm metal prong work. Those that are wider and blunt are difficult to seat in the Kindle's female receptacle. Unlike most PCs, where the jack fits flush to the edge of the PC, the Kindle has a recessed hole within the hole and it is not flush. This "bored" out recess does not allow many plugs to seat. The problem is exacerbated if you use the official Kindle cover, which further prevents some plugs from seating.

I also had issues with finding a headphone set that worked with my Kindle fire 7 HDX. Amazon helped me out. We wanted to make sure something wasn't wrong with the Kindle. Well it is probably like another poster said, the receptacle on the kindle, is most likely the issue. Not all 3.5 plugs will work. Amazon actually sent me this headset to try, and they worked. I had tried a set of ear buds and another set I purchased from Amazon. The ear bud set worked only on one side, unless I gently would move the plus a bit and then there was sound in both buds. The headset I purchased would make my volume rocker go bonkers, where it would take on a life of it's own, and go up and down, without me doing anything. But the headset below works just fine, and the sound is great, for a headset at this price point. They sound like they are more expensive headsets, in my opinion.
