Hey all,

So... I REALLY need to find voice to text dictation software (like Dragon Naturally Speaking) for a KindleFire. The catch is that it CAN'T require a wifi connection (so a "remote microphone" or similar wouldn't work.) Is there any standalone app that does not need a connection in order to work? It seems impossible to believe that there isn't, but I haven't any luck in finding it!! All info appreciated. :)

I can't imagine why a voice recognition app would require wi-fi to work. It just needs a microphone, which is built-in on some Fires, I believe.

Yeah, they do require that your voice be sent to a server, where it is recognized and transcribed.

The problem with that is that voice-to-text requires a pretty massive database to work correctly. I don't believe there is such a program for the Kindle Fire that operates without WiFi.

What you want is physically impossible. Voice recognition requires a lot of processing power, as well as, as A. Dietz mentioned, a large database for comparison. There's not a tablet made that has the processing power and storage space necessary to do a good job of that without referring most of the work to a server farm via Wi-Fi.

Well-- back to the drawing board! Thanks for everyone's advice. It's a good illustration of why I should have gotten something with built-in wifi to begin with-- the entire POINT is that voice to text dictation would not be done while sitting in the middle of Starbucks, and there would no point in doing it on a Kindle at home. There must be an Android app for a Samsung somewhere, which would be the way to go, I guess.
