Should I give my mom a case along with her kindle?

I just purchased my mom a kindle paperwhite for mother's day. At $100 it was out of my price range, but I wanted to get her something nice for once because she really deserves it. I know I want to gift her a couple books for it, but I can't decide if I should spend the $12-15 on a case or not? She will be using it at home 99% of the time. I know if I don't buy her a case, she won't likely buy one for it herself. I could probably sew her a simple drawstring case or something, but I'm not capable of making anything she could actually keep it in while reading. It would just be for storage. My only thought is that she may fall asleep with it near her like I sometimes do. But in that case, would a cover for it really do much good? Have you been in situations where you were really glad you had a case? Is it worth it in the long run even if you're only reading at home?

eInk Kindles like the Paperwhite have very thin screens, so any pressure against them, light objects like car keys or pet claws hitting the screen, or torque can damage the sensitive eInk substrate and damage it. This can happen whether sitting on a nightstand, placed into a purse, or sitting on a counter.

Before purchasing any books, I highly recommend a good protective case to keep the Kindle in at all times.

Thanks for the recommendation! I may get this one: MoKo Cover Case for Amazon All-New Kindle Paperwhite (Both 2012 and 2013 versions with 6" Display and Built-in Light), BLACK (With Smart Auto Sleep/Wake feature)

You're welcome, Jamie. Moko makes nice products, and you can never go wrong with protecting your investment first.

Jamie Lynn, the power button on the PW2 is very small, and I find it difficult to press correctly. I've ordered a case with the auto sleep/wake feature because of that, even though I know the PW2 will only be kept at home.

We have 4 Paperwhites in our family, and no one keeps it in a case. We do use sleeves when traveling with it out of the house. I don't recommend a case because it just makes them heavier. Just be careful with it. The power button isn't that hard to press.

Do you have a PW2? I find it very difficult to press, and I have 3 other Kindles.

Jamie Lynn-
You are the best daughter on planet Earth! If you are not already your mom's favorite kid, you soon will be:) I also recommend a case. How can you possibly wait a whole week before you surprise her?

I do, and I haven't had any issues with it. Then again, I'm used to touch screen! Hopefully my mom doesn't have any issues. She would have preferred page turn buttons, but I thought she needed the light for reading in bed.

EDIT: I misread your post as I didn't realize it was a reply to another post- so what I was referring to was the touch screen function. Oops!

LOL I am an only child so I've always been the favorite. ;) I just put the official Kindle cover (fuchsia) in my amazon cart. I have the purple one for mine, and every time I pick up (or even look at) my Kindle I'm so happy I spent the $40 on it. I wasn't sure she needed a case, but I figure I got the Kindle at $20 off so why not buy the best case to go along with it. :) I'm glad you guys convinced me to buy a case! lol And to be honest- I'm not sure I can wait the whole week! haha My only concern is that she's never owned anything "touch screen" before.

Hahaha! I guess you ARE her favorite! I think you are wise to get the "official" cover:). I have one and love it! I am glad i spent the extra $ . It will probably take her all of one evening to get used to the touch screen. Only seven long "sleeps" until mother's day!

Jamie Lynn, I was asking SeaLevel274, because she didn't recommend getting a case. I have a K2, KK, and Fire, and the PW2's power button is much more difficult for me to use because it's so small (and hard to see, at least for my eyes). Also, the PW is so small in comparison to my other Kindles that I feel like it needs some protection.

I'm glad you went ahead and got your mother the cover.

That's okay. Although I've had a Fire for a few months, I use a stylus with it (and I don't use it to read), so the PW is my first touch screen reader. I'm fine with it and I'm sure your mother will be, too.

I personally love my neoprene case with the 2 zippers for my kindle- something like this one:

ColorYourLife Bundle of Free Birds Printed Sleeve Case Bag Cover for Kindle / Kindle Touch / Kindle Paperwhite with 2 Stylus Pens and Microfiber Cleaning Cloths (Yellow free bird, 6 inch)

When it's all zipped up, I feel like even if I accidentally somehow spilled something on it, the kindle would still be protected. After getting this, I also ordered a neoprene case/envelopes for my other devices.

I have a variety of cases but my favorites are ones with a hand strap. Moko makes several for the paperwhite with a hand strap. Jut do a search amazon wide for moko ereader case with hand strap. There are several within your price range. If you have arthritis in your hands they are a life saver when you read with them. They do not add much more weight to the paperweight but I think the assist you get with the hand strap out weights anything else.

Ooops... actually mine is more like this one, where the kindle is held into the case with little elastic straps, and then the neoprene case unzips and opens up flat like a book, and you don't have to remove the kindle from the case. It looks like the one I posted earlier is a sleeve- not nearly as nice.

NeoSkin Kindle Zip Sleeve, Owls (Fits Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite, Neoprene Kindle Cover, Kindle Case)

What a great daughter! I would definitely get a case...mine zips and should I drop it, somewhat protects the device when not in use. And don't forget to point your mother to free books(or perhaps set up her account and preload a few freebies that you think that she might enjoy).

Meant to add that you can set up using your credit card number and when you give it to her, have credit card number changed to hers so that you are not charged for her future books.

Just be aware that some folks have had a problem with the auto off/on magnet in the case, including me. I ended up removing the magnet because it kept turning on the PW and discharging the battery. If you look at eBay there are a lot of cases offered for much less than the official Amazon case.

I don't keep my paperwhite in a case at all. I do put it into a sleeve if I am taking it in my purse. I found the case I had was very hard to get the Kindle out of.

If my kid gave me a Kindle, I'd think it was a pretty awesome gift! If it didn't happen to include a cover, though, I'd go ahead and buy one. A Kindle without a sturdy cover, to me, is like a bowling ball with no carry case.
