I love my kindle fire. I bought my daughter the paperwhite 3G but just found out her husband also bought her one. Should I keep the paperwhite for myself? I like to read in the sun, at my pool and the beach. Will this be better? Will I miss the color screen and the web access?

You can keep your kindle fire for web and email and use your paperwhite for reading. I have a fire hd and an hdx. I also have the first generation paperwhite and this years paperwhite 3G. I love and use them all but if I could only keep one I would choose the paperwhite 3G. You can also sync your books between your fire and your paperwhite, so if you need to charge one you can pick up right where you were on the other. If you can only keep one, keep in mind that the paperwhite has no speakers,so no text to speech.

If you already have a Fire, why would you miss those things? You'll still be able to use it when you want a color screen or web access.

Thanks for your input. I was wondering because I am debating on giving one away to my mom.

They're completely different machines. It's like comparing a book to a movie. The Fire is great for playing games, accessing the internet, watching movies, viewing magazines, etc. The Paperwhite is like reading off a hard copy book - the screen reacts more like paper than a computer screen. It's a dedicated reader though, and that's basically what it's good for. You can't do any of the things I listed for the Fire well on the Paperwhite. If you're going to give one away, consider what you want the device for the most and give away the other. Many people have both because they do such different things.

I have the Kindle Fire HDX and I also have the Kindle Paperwhite. I grab the Kindle Paperwhite when I want to just read. Personally, I wouldn't want to be without the Kindle Paperwhite. It does exactly what it advertises as far as reading in bright light or sunlight. No glare. That was why I bought mine. There are very few days I don't read, so it is perfect for me.

I also have a Fire and didn't think I needed a PaperWhite...till I got one. Yes, I can read on the Fire but more often than not I get distracted by Facebook or email, reading before bed becomes overstimulating. With PaperWhite I settle into bed and just read, no competing distractions. Having both is very'worthwhile.

Plus when you fall asleep while you're reading and the Kindle Paperwhite bops you on the nose it doesn't hurt as much as the Kindle Fire does.

Well, I'm sure your mom would appreciate the gift. But personally, when I'm doing serious extended time reading, I prefer to do it on a Paperwhite or an eInk reader. And my new Paperwhite is really exceptional for dedicated reading, I was surprised. I do read on my Fire HDX, and did on my HD, but only for brief stints.
