Welcome to the Wine On Wednesday's FB&C (Free Books and Chat . . . or is that Friends, Books and Chat?) for 14 May 2014.

We're glad you've popped in! No matter what time it is in your corner of the world - morning, midday, midafternoon or midnight - it's 5 o'clock somewhere. The sommelier is at your service and will be happy to suggest a suitable red, white, or pink to suit your own preferences. In spite of his expertise, he's no snob so feel free to ask for the "pink wine in the box" if that's what you like.
Pick a comfortable chair, sofa or recliner (they are all near outlets, should your Kindle or other devices need recharging). The lighting is perfect for reading, relaxing, and, of course, chats.

The book selected is Beatrice Munson by Lorena Bathey

In Vista Heights, the women of the neighborhood have started to look like their homes, varying shades of beige. Lost in this world of suburbia, Marissa Lyons learns her high school nemesis has bought the house right across the street from her. Afraid that her arch enemy, Beatrice Munson, will arrive with Marissa's high school crush as her husband and cause Marissa to relive the insecurity of high school in her forties she decides to face the music and heads to Beatrice's house with warm cupcakes. But what Marissa finds is something she never expected.

How will Marissa and the rest of the women of San Martino deal with someone like Beatrice Munson, whose defining moment in her life was to get a boob job or go on a trip to Egypt.

This story is about friendship, love, learning to look at things differently, and great parties.

Step into the world of Vista Heights where you might recognize the women, or you might be one of them.

Unfortunately, it is NOT FREE right now but it is lending enabled. Let us know if you need to borrow a copy.

On 14 May 1948, the State of Israel was proclaimed. Britain had governed Palestine since 1920, but the UN approved the Partition Plan for Palestine in November 1947, calling for the formation of two states -- one Jewish and one Arab -- as well as a small, internationally administered zone in formerly British territory. Arab leadership rejected the plan, but the declaration was made nonethless. The next day, five Arab states declared war on Israel.

How did the war end?

European court says Google must respect 'right to be forgotten'

(Reuters) - Internet companies can be made to remove irrelevant or excessive personal information from search engine results, Europe's top court ruled on Tuesday in a case pitting privacy campaigners against Google.

The Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) upheld the complaint of a Spanish man who objected to the fact that Google searches on his name threw up links to a 1998 newspaper article about the repossession of his home.

The case highlighted the struggle in cyberspace between free speech advocates and supporters of privacy rights who say people should have the "right to be forgotten" - meaning that they should be able to remove their digital traces from the Internet.

It creates technical challenges as well as potential extra costs for companies like Google, the world's no. 1 search engine, and Facebook.

Google can be required to remove data that are "inadequate, irrelevant or no longer relevant, or excessive in relation to the purposes for which they were processed and in the light of the time that has elapsed," said judges at the Luxembourg-based court. The ECJ said the rights of people whose privacy has been infringed outweighed the general public interest.

Google said it was disappointed with the ruling, which contradicted a non-binding opinion from the ECJ's court adviser last year that said deleting sensitive information from search results would interfere with freedom of expression.

"We are very surprised that it differs so dramatically from the Advocate General's opinion and the warnings and consequences that he spelled out. We now need to take time to analyze the implications," said Google spokesman Al Verney.

The European Commission proposed in 2012 that people should have the "right to be forgotten" on the Internet. This was watered down by the European Parliament last year in favor of a

"right to erasure" of specific information.

The proposal needs the blessing of the 28 European Union governments before it can become law. Google, Facebook and other Internet companies have lobbied against such plans, worried about the extra costs.

Oh are really pushing the envelope here aren't you? State of Israel?
Here in OZ we would run a mile from mentioning the angst of Israel/Palestine; you are a brave lady or is it not an issue in the US?
We had our Federal budget handed down last night...OH what a screamer...., no compassion for the less well off or less able. No compassion for the environment, no compassion for the young, no compassion for the old, no compassion for the sciences and no compassion for the future.
I expect to be followed now (by the don't mention them) after expressing my views!!! Oh well I'm old enough not to be a threat I suppose!

Thanks, KaJoLa.

Jude, the Israel/Palestine issue is an issue for many . . . but it is probably the best known of the items I found for this day in history. I'm not taking a side, just reporting what happened. I admit I do not fully comprehend the Arab-Israeli conflict, but I'm not convinced that anyone does, including Arabs and Israelis. Such a very long history. Such a very bitter history. Such a history of contention. So many wrongs. Not nearly enough rights. So tragic. For all of us.

Good morning Plays, thanks for the start. I hope you are feeling well rested and generally well today after all the mucking work. I was glad to hear Mr. Dirt helped out.

I could feel the effects of all of Monday's yard work as the day wore on yesterday. I am trying to get myself enthused for some more today.

On a positive note, the library notified me late yesterday that several "new releases" that I had been waiting for are now on hold for me. I just finished another book from the library so I am excited to pick these up and start reading. In particular I am looking forward to reading *NOT FREE* Walking on Water: A Novel *NOT FREE*. I read the first four in the series back in late December and I have been eagerly looking forward to this one being released. I had previously read most of Richard Paul Evan's books years ago but I hadn't read anything for some time when I happened upon this series. In the meantime I caught up on his other releases too, I highly recommend "The Walk" series but his other books are great too.

Stallions at Burnt Rock (West Texas Sunrise Book #1): A Novel
Lee Morgan dreams of raising the ideal ranch horse-one that has speed, stamina, and heart. On her Texas spread near the town of Burnt Rock, the high-spirited woman heads her own horse ranch operation. It's an unusual occupation for a female in the 1870s, but as an expert horsewoman and a crack shot with a rifle, she's quite adept at taking care of herself.
Determined to gain fame for her fine horses, Lee agrees to enter her magnificent coal-black stallion in a match race, never dreaming she's about to set into motion a string of events that will threaten herself, her ranch, and her friend-town marshall, Ben Flood. As gamblers, gunslingers, and shysters descend on Burnt Rock to bet on the now-famous race, Lee comes face-to-face with sinister men who seek to destroy her plans. Her true courage and strong faith shine through when she embarks on the most thrilling ride of her life.
The first in a series of western novels, Stallions at Burnt Rock is a masterfully spun tale of a strong,

Small, thank you for the gift of Death Turns A Trick : A Romantic and Humorous San Francisco Cozy (Rebecca Schwartz Mystery Series Book 1) (The Rebecca Schwartz Series) and your sweet message! I definitely can use some humor. I'm about 2/3 the way through a series and will probably start this series next. Thank you!

I made myself go get groceries before the store got too crowded and it got too hot. You know it's going to be a scorcher when it already quite humid and the thermometer in your car says 77* at 7am. The groceries are long put away and I'm resting in my recliner. The landscapers are going full blast trying to get the complex done before the heat becomes unbearable and the rain starts.

The cashier didn't ring up my $5 coupon for an OTC medication and the drive through messed up my order. So it's definitely a full moon start to the day. I'm safely home with good friends to talk to online and good books to read so the day's looking better already. :D

Lenora, my aren't you an ambitious one! You are very welcome.

I just came back from a couple errands and am waiting to go to the dump. My son is not moving very quickly so it may be afternoon by the time we get there. I'm still planning on going to the local nursery so hopefully I can get my chores done soon.

Plays, the mystery series I referred to yesterday is the Gray Whale Inn Mysteries by Karen MacInerney. The first in the series is *NOT FREE* Murder on the Rocks (Gray Whale Inn Mysteries, No. 1) *NOT FREE* I stumbled upon them through Overdrive lending and I have read the first five in the series, the sixth just came out on May 1st.

Bubba, I hope you haven't had to seek medical attention for your adventurous day yesterday. It certainly sounds like it was a lot of fun! I'll be looking forward to your future adventures with the curly headed one.

*Waving to all*

Lenora, I, too, decided to get an early start on grocery shopping . . . because we're expecting another inch or two of rain, a forecast that is prompting another flash flood watch and threats that some areas (please, please, not mine?) will get much more. My cashier remembered my coupons and my store-app discounts, but forgot the rebate for bringing my own bags. She caught herself after the transaction had closed, so she keyed in another and handed me a quarter. I figure I got a tip for getting groceries.

cat, I feel . . . OK. The storm front heading this way has slotted my bones into body-sized vises and is tightening the screws. I have pretty decent muscles from mucking out the stalls regularly, so they aren't complaining. I'm still considerably under-hydrated, though.

Susan, glad to see you back. I think of you now every time I see a new, different or unrecognizable bird, and especially when my hawk-friend comes to watch me while I exercise in my little pool. He needs a name, since he's been hanging out with me for a couple of summers. I just hope he isn't calling me "dinner." Anyway, hope you enjoyed your vacation despite the inevitable back-to-work stuff.

Target had HD on sale, plus online coupons, plus a Cartwheel app discount. Well, I just had to, didn't I?

I've been to Cranberry Island! Thanks, cat. I think I will check to see if I can borrow it with my library card.

If it doesn't rain, the farrier is due. But he won't come if it rains. And he probably won't come thinking it will rain. So, I guess I will just start singing . . .
