Can Kindle Fire's Gallery app play mp4 videos in widescreen/landscape?

A different thread here said I could sideload MP4 videos onto my kindle fire, and then open those videos through the gallery App. This works, but the videos only play in a tiny fraction of the screen in portrait mode. Is it possible to play it in widescreen/portrait mode or do i have to get a different app to play my own videos? Seems like an unnecessary hassle.

I just tried this now with an MP4 video I sideloaded to the Gallery. I can start the video in either portrait or landscape view. Also, while the video is playing I am able to have it switch between portrait or landscape(widescreen) view just by rotating the Fire in my hand. I'm not saying you don't have a problem just because mine works. I've got other stuff that doesn't work right.

THE CASE OF THE GHOST FILES: I have another question - I loaded some .avi files via USB into the video folder and tried playing these with Gallery - didn't work obviously. I deleted them from the video directory, but Gallery still shows them (with thumbnails) as existing in a blank directory name. I try deleting within Gallery, they disappear temporarily but come back the next time I restart the app. I'm assuming there is some file that Gallery uses that provides it with all the shortcuts to these old files, but I"m not sure how to find it or delete these links. Any ideas?

Might depend on the format size of your video. Remember that fire screen is 1024 x 600 pixel resolution.

I downloaded free video file converter (converterlite) to change from .avi, or any format into MP4. If the image is high def, then it should fill the screen. I haven't had any problems with landscape vs portrait, image resizes fine.

Make sure that your screen rotation is unlocked. Once you open settings, it's the first option on the top left.

When converting from whatever the video file format is, convert to .MP4 BUT the quality must be DVD quality (the encoding parameters). It took me this weekend to figure it out. I cannot share the specifics from the Amazon rules and I respect that.

Did you ever find a solution to this?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 26, 2011 10:40:12 AM PST
Yes I did find a couple of solutions actually. Once I converted the .avi or divx or whatever file format to .mp4 I then side loaded the file/s into the kindle on the video folder. Using the gallery app the video will appear as a "thumbnail" or portrait size picture. Tap the video and it will start playing within 30 seconds in widescreen. Also there is a utility app named avia I downloaded it from the app store and it will play MP4 videos on the kindle w/out side loading. It works great. Finally if you really want to step out there and stream video on the fly you can use tversity media server along with windows media player and no need for converting video at all. However this approach is not for the beginner. Using this method once you start the stream it is best you have time for it to completely finish as I have noticed it will hang and or cause the avia app to crash. I hope this helps anyone.

I got a fire for Xmas. When I use You tube to play video, it only plays in portarit mode in half screen. Any way to rotate to landscape and view in full screen?

Posted on Dec 26, 2011 8:44:39 PM PST
Hey Thomas, can you be more specific? My g/f and I own Fires and we are able to access uTube and play videos in landscape or portrait. Are you trying to stream any content? If so the kindle will only play video in .mp4 or .vp8 extensions. Having said that, there are also other apps and software that the Kindle will play your content.

I was able to do the first thing you mentioned and it worked great. Next I'll try Avia; not sure about the 3rd thing, since I have a Mac and you mention windows media player.

Do you start the video in portrait and then you can't rotate it after it starts? If so, try starting it with the Fire already in landscape. I noticed sometimes when I start a downloaded movie, I have a stand on my Fire and want the movie to play so I can put the stand up and watch hands free, but I have to stop the movie and then turn the Fire upside down and restart the movie to get it to play right, it won't rotate when it's playing. Also, I think earlier someone mentioned to someone else to check if the screen orientation is locked (under Settings and Lock/Unlock).

In the Gallery app, is there any way to get the names of the videos to show? Mine just has the thumbnails, and it's sometimes hard to tell which video is which.

Serendipity, you are correct I am using a Windows PC. Good news, Tversity is MAC compatible I believe on anything later than on the OS X or later. Please goto, for the specs. You will need a DNLA client in order to stream video using this service. I hope this helps.

Please check out this video package, it is FREE - no ads, it just works. I have been working with the developer for a week now about my convered videos playing in landscape (could not get it out of portrait orientation) then found this post and yes, my screen was locked. The converter will convert to H264, 1024x600 2.5Mbit/sAAC 192 Kbit/s 48 KHz - not sure if it is HD but Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (digitizeded from my DVR to MPEG) looks good to my grandchild...................... Also, has a bunch of converters - youtube to just about anything

I found a solution on another post. Download an app called ES File Explorer. It will let you browse your kindle and see files names.

Hope this helps!
