I have about 1300 books that were formerly all on one Kindle keyboard. Bought a Kindle Touch ($99 special offers unit) from Amazon with thought of having half of books on each unit. Kindle Touch arived, and I downloaded several hundred books. Then it no longer could download books. I tried making collections, but it kept losing the collections--they simply vanished. Then it began giving window titled "Unable to start application" Inside the window it said "The selected application could not be started. Please try again. " A button in the box was labeled "Close". The close button was never able to close the window. It was always necessary to do a hard restart.

Amazon took 5, ,yes 5, days to get a replacement to me. Meanwhile I bought a Kindle Touch from BestBuy. So far it works fine.

Replacement unit from Amazon finally arrived. I decided to split my books among the 2 Kindle Touch units and keep old Keyboard units in reserve.

Kindle Touch from Amazon was unable to register. Kindle Tech worked for a long time and finally found that Amazon database lacked the MAC address for the Kindle. It had accidentally been left out. I have him the address and he put it in database and Kindle was able to register and download books.

Now that I am starting to arrange books into collections, the Amazon sent Touch is giving the same error message as the first unit from Amazon. A refinement is that the screen blinks sometimes when the "Unable to start application" window appears.

Second dud in a row. I think Amazon has a pile of defective Kindle Touch units. Don't know what to do. Perhaps I should return 2nd defective KIndle Touch and get unit locally if they are still in stock.

First of all how many books are you putting on your Touch to start with? When you say application are you trying to run a game or one of the active content apps?

Putting about 670 books on device; a Keyboard kindle has all ca. 1300 books without crashing. The Kindle Touch that I bought from BestBuy has at least as many books as the defective Touch and works fine. Defective unit freezes or sometimes freezes and shows unable to start application window when I try to enter collections, try to add books to collections, try to move around device. have not tried to run any games. It's just a second defective unit. It's frozen now without window. I was trying to add books to a collection. It has been sitting with no changes for ca. 5 mins.

I did a search in this forum and found other people are having similar problems. One person reported the problems started after just one book was put on the Kindle Touch!

Sorry, can't figure out to make a link.

Amazon is apparently shipping defective kindles. I received 2 that did not work - problem still unresolved. I tested it on 10+ secure and non-secure wifi networks with no success. I spent hours testing myself and with support and no luck. Can't tell whether it is is hardware or software. It seems that I am not the only one as there are many complaints out there from similar frustrated buyers.

Well I guess the joke is on amazon anyway - I bought the "with special offers" version which doesn't show offers because I can't register it anyway (with wifi). So I am stuck with no wifi and you have to be kidding me if I'm going to buy the 3G for this reason

Actually the joke's is on you. *Users* on a forum can't do anything about a hardware problem but CS could replace it or refund it. Or, you know, you can just keep it even though there's something wrong with it.

CS send me a brand new defective kindle again. I'm sending it back.
