Does the new Paper white have text to speech? That was one of my favorite features on my Kindle Keyboard. I love to listen while I do house work.

The PaperWhite has no speakers and no headphone jack, so it has no audio capability - no text-to-speech, no audio books, no music.

No it does not. The Paperwhite has no speakers or headphone jack so it has no audio capabilites at all. No TTS, No MP3s, No Audio Books, etc.

That makes me sad. I was super excited about the paper white. But I guess it's something I can do without.

Of course, if TTS is the only way you read, Paperwhite is no use to you. But if you read the screen a significant amount, you could use the PW for reading, and the KK for TTS.

I have a bit of dyslexia and also eye strain problems so I like to visually read and listen to TTS at the same time. It helps me to concentrate better. It is the only way I can really read a book now and has been very helpful to me to be able to concentrate and read faster. I would love to have the lighted version so that I can read in bed without disturbing my spouse. This is a deal breaker for me though, so I will not be buying the PW.

I was so excited about the Paper White until I learned today that it doesn't have text to speech capability. I love to read, and sometimes listen to my books. My husband was going to buy this for my birthday next month, but I won't be getting it now as I REALLY liked that feature. Guess I'll be keeping my original Kindle! Disappointed...

I was so excited for the new paperwhite, but there is no use in having the lighted screen but not the text to speech... i'm going to keep my old kindle touch. Hope they'll do better with the next kindle...

This isn't a real answer to your question but another option you have that might interest you. The Kindle Fire HD has a feature called Immersion Reading. It lets you buy both the Kindle version and the Audible audiobook version and put them both on the Fire. Then when you turn on TTS instead of getting a computer voice you get a professional narrator. The phrase she's reading is highlighted in the text, which makes it very easy to follow.

They generally give you a large discount on the Kindle version if you've bought the Audible version, or maybe I remember that backwards. I forget which one you buy first or if that even matters. I'm not sure that discount is always available on every book but it's on most of them that I looked at and in a lot of cases if you buy one the other is free.

The Fire HD also has normal TTS for when you don't have the audiobook, and it's lighted.

Keep in mind though that it has an LCD screen and not e-ink like your current Kindle. A lot of people don't really care for reading on an LCD screen and I'm one of those. But a lot of people are fine with it. It's just a question of what you like and what your eyes like.

Thanks Barry! I had no idea the fire HD had text to speech. I have a regular Fire. That is good to know!

To reduce weight, to reduce cost and because not everyone wants it.

Kindle really screwed up not putting text to speech on the paper white.

My mom bought me the PW for Christmas but since it didn't have tts I sent it back and bought some tools instead.

I, too, am very disappointed that the Paperwhite lacks Text-To-Speech. I listen to books via TTS in my car all the time. Very disappointing, may be a dealbreaker.

A lighted display ereader is rather pointless for using while in a car. The PW has been out for six months. I'm willing to bet that the new models in the fall will have at least one version with TTS. IMHO.

If you already have a Kindle with TTS that works in your car, why would you need a Paperwhite? Just wonderin'...

I don't want a dedicated device for the car. I'd like to give my KK to my wife when I upgrade. I listen to TTS in the car, then read the regular way at lunch and at night. Obviously I don't need the PW "in the car", but I'm not excited about having to keep two devices in order to fulfill the functionality of one.

The lighted case for my KK recently broke, so I'm without case or illumination right now. Rather than spending $50? on a new lighted case, I was hoping to get the upgraded screen and illumination capabilities of the PW, while still having the ability to use TTS in the car or when doing rote work at the computer. Obviously I'm out of luck.
