JDP says:
I have been searching for hours on the web and forums and cannot seem to find answers to these two seemingly simple and straight-forward questions:

1. I have some mobi files. I see how to load them on the Kindle Touch through Calibri (is there another way?)... however, is there a way to synchronize all mobi files on my Kindle Touch to Kindle for PC? Ideally, I would like to have all kindle ebooks, mobi files, and ideally pdfs or other personal documents synced between kindle touch and kindle for pc (it would be even cooler if I could also do that with my Android).

2. When reading a mobi on the Kindle Touch... is there any way to sync the highlights and notes to Kindle for PC for viewing?

3. Is there any kind of PC application for managing the Kindle Touch? Kindle for PC seems to basically be a reader. Can i manage the actual Kindle Touch device when it is connected to my PC with any kind of software? (for example: Managing playlists and songs on an iPod through iTunes)

I'm sorry if I've missed some obvious things here (I assume I have)... I just cannot find definitive answers anywhere and I'm exhausted.

Thanks for the help!

I don't think I can be of much help.

I know that books you buy from Amazon will sync across all Kindles and apps that you download the books to.

For books and docs from other sources, if you email them to any Kindle (as opposed to using Calibre to add them, or just adding them manually) they will also be added to your MYK page. From there you can download them to any other Kindles, and they will be synced across all the Kindles you've loaded them on. Currently you can not download them from MYK to any of the apps. You can copy them to the apps manually, but no syncing will be done. Supposedly, this feature is going to be added to the apps at some point.

The only management software I know of is Calibre, but I haven't yet used it to create collections or even to send books or docs to a Kindle.

I have a K3 and now a Touch, and I'd planned to try to learn to create collections in Calibre and send Amazon and non-Amazon books to the Touch; I think I'd still have to email the non-Amazon ones to a Kindle to get them onto MYK, and I'd still not be able to download or sync to the apps (Android and PC) until Amazon adds the feature.

I read somewhere here that Calibre does not yet recognize the Kindle Touch, and I don't see any mention of the Touch on the Calibre update log; the Fire was just added in the latest update. I also read on Mobileread, I think, that the Touch doesn't use the same file as the other Kindles to store collection data. I don't know if that's true, but I guess it would complicate things if it is true.

Thanks for the information!

I had no problem exporting a few books from Calibre onto my Kindle Touch.

Do you know if there is a way to import highlights made on the Kindle Touch to Kindle for PC?

I still have not been able to get my Kindle Touch highlights to display on the desktop.

Is the mbp1 file format only for the newest generation kindles? Most of the forum posts I've seen references a mbp file as the container of highlights and annotations... but my kindle only produces mpb1 files.

I thought replacing or overwriting the mbp1 file from the Touch to the related desktop folder would do the trick... but no dice.

I don't understand why it isn't as easy as copying the .mbp1 file from my Kindle Touch to the corresponding directory for the book's files on my PC.

I've been wondering how to do this too. I'm not sure I can be of much help. I know highlights from even non-Amazon mobi files are stored in My Clippings, but I don't know if this syncs with anything. It will let you manually look them up, but I'm not sure how much use this is. Sorry I couldn't be more help :(

Mr. Consumer says:
I think I figured it out. Drag the files from your Kindle to the corresponding content folder for Kindle PC. Then go into that content folder, and load the file from the folder, opening it with the Kindle app. From that point, it should appear in the Library on your Kindle for PC app. At least, that's what it's doing for me. Hope it helps!

BTW Calibre supports kindle touch just fine for me. I need to do more sophisticated things with it, but for loading documents from disparate sources to my Touch it works fine.

You can only sync books, highlights, and notes from books you've purchased from Amazon. If you purchased them somewhere else and loaded them onto your Kindle, you can't sync them with other Kindle apps or other Kindles.

I understand now that syncing does not work... I just want the highlights to show up (even if it is manual).

A. Dietz says:
If you didn't buy the books from Amazon, highlighting won't sync.

JDP says:
I am differentiating between "sync" (automatic synchronization among devices) and "display" (exist / be viewable)... it would seem even if they don't automatically sync, there should be a way to take highlights saved in a mobi annotation file and manually transfer them from kindle to pc

I've been trying to figure out the sync problem too but no luck so far. The best info I've seen so far is that soon syncing of personal documents is in the works. One way of easily loading my docs across devices is using dropbox. I load all files I want available to it on my computer then grab them from the app on my iphone, ipad, etc. I even share certain folders with people who have android devices and it has worked great.

That is disappointing; I feel your pain. I found this out the hard way as well.

If I e-mail a word document, PDF, or other document that kindles will receive and I highlight it on my kindle, you would expect it to at least synch your highlights, bookmarks, and annotations on your kindle PC but no. I hope this improves. I would love to see the synch occur with the source documents on my computer, but if not, at least synch them with the Kindle PC.

I have the same issue as JDP with an additional one. I also want to sync my notes. The book purchase was through Amazon but the two devices are an iPad and Kindle app for PC.
