Don't want to assume it will be there. Would like to know!

Thanks!

Not to my knowledge

Without speakers, I don't see how it could possibly be there. I could be wrong.

Oh no! That's a deal breaker for me. I love text to speech. How could they not?

No speakers? I liked to listen to mp3s on my kindle while reading. Now I'll have to rethink getting a paperwhite. :-\

The product comparison on a Kindle pages lists no speakers on the Paperwhite, a shame I think.

I doesnt have speakers, but i was hoping it would have a headphone jack. But i dont think it does! Wow so only 2 gigs of memory and no text to speech!! Im so disappointed!!

I have to agree I thought the 2GB was a bit disappointing too. And no TTS or sound means no Audible books. Kind of a step backwards.

CarolynR says:
How can we find out if it at least has a headphone jack?

Why announce whispersynch with audio books, but have no audio book capability on the new paperwhite? Amazon fail.

Hawkeye says:
It doesn't support any audio file types, so probably no headphone port.

Nobody says:
That Whispersynch with audio books is on the new Fire models. But I see no indication that the new Fires have text to speech for the documents the owner sends to the device. Big disappointment.

Obviously it's got to have a headphone jack, at least, since there are references to its audio capabilities. (The Paperwhite, I'm referring to.) But the built-in speaker(s) question remains unanswered, unconfirmed. I was looking at specs listed on gdgt.com, and they indicate mono speaker(s?) and TextToSpeech. Here's a copy/paste from there:
Audio playbackYes
Audio codec supportMP3
Audible supportYes
Audio jack3.5mm
SpeakersMono
Text-to-speechYes
Photo viewerYes
Image format supportBMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG

I'm so disappointed about it too. I really love the text to speech feature. I won't buy a new one without it. And 2 GB that is too small!! Why are we getting less storage instead of more??????

That information doesn't match what's on Amazon's product page for the Paperwhite.

Hawkeye says:
Amazon doesn't mention audio anywhere for paperwhite.

Yeah, you really shouldn't believe everything you hear from rumours. I'd trust what Amazon states for their device over a third party. Unlike the Kindle Keyboard, under supported formats MP3 or any other audio format is not mentioned. So there most likely is no headphone jack.

Me too. Been waiting for this new product release and now I'm sorry I didn't order a Kindle Touch months ago.

Not good. Had it on my wish list, then started looking for text to speach. I use it ALL the time. I read at night then listen as I drive to and from work, then read more that night. No text to speach, no sale! I was really looking forward to the front light! Oh well.

If its not listed on Amazon then that means its not a feature. So I dont think there will be any audio speaker or headphone wise.

I don't consider the spec sheet on gdgt.com to be rumours. However, it's possible it's inaccurate... I'm just repoerting what's posted there... Not just some comment or tweet, but graphically posted.

However, it does seem odd that amazon hasn't included anything about audio for that device...

Later edit of this post: thanks to those of you who went to the source and asked amazon directly. Now we know for sure there are no audio features (hardware or otherwise) on this device. I've sent gdgt.com a notice about their irresponsibe reporting of totally inaccurate specs for this device, where they included all kinds of audio files compatibility, speakers, text to speech, etc.

Even later update to this post: gdgt.com acted very quickly to remove the inaccurate info from their Paperwhite spec sheet, and replied thanking me for the info. That was an impressively quick response!

I called Tech support at Amazon. None of the new Kindle devices, Paperwhite, etc have tesct-to-speech. The rep. I talked to said that Amazon indicated that this feature was not wanted by the large majority of Kindle owners. So those of us who use it are out of luck.

There is no text to speech on the Paperwhite. Confirmed by Amazon.

Well, thanks for saving me $119 and $39.99 on a cover too! No audio is a deal breaker.

In reply to an earlier post on Sep 6, 2012 2:15:39 PM PDT
Oh, that is a huge bummer. My autistic son has benefited so tremendously from that feature - it has expanded his reading possibilities well-beyond what they are without it.

Will they be eliminating that from all of the kindles over time? Because that is a huge accessibility boon for the vision impaired. This is incredibly disappointing news.
