Welcome to Saturday at Walden Pond.

I expect today to be a quiet, laid back kind of day. I had thought I had no real theme but maybe it is celebration.

Normally I just pick a day to start but sometimes the day picks me. I originally picked today to give Susan a well earned weekend off and because it is the twentieth wedding anniversary of some friends. They live in another state so there won't be any getting together except by email. They aren't big on celebrations so I will just say congratulations and say may the next 20 be even better.

interesting facts about the 20th anniversary.
20th Traditional Anniversary Gift: CHINA
Modern Gift: PLATINUM
Gemstone: EMERALD
Flower: DAY LILY
Popular Songs 20 Years Ago: "LOVE SHACK" - B 52's
Price of Gasoline: $1.02 / gallon

I had thought to do a start on weddings or anniversaries because of this one and because a lot of my friends and acquaintances seem to have picked this year to get married. But other topics wanted to pop in and say hi.

Celebration.

Let me say that it has been a very interesting last ten days for Lyn and me. The highlights are few but significant:

Lyn is slowly healing from sinus surgery and hopefully the sinus headaches will be a thing of the past.
She had a checkup today and is on schedule. :)

But the real happy dance celebration comes with this week's latest body scan. Sort of. But we will go with the really cool news. We have been battling lung nodules for just shy of 3 years. When a doctor says lung nodules that they think are cancer, they are basically saying you have roughly 18 more months.

The scan she had this week has been, for various reasons, seen by 3 different doctors. The last scan was 6 months ago and showed diminished or stable nodules. All good news. This scan ... this scan showed zero, zilch, nada nodules. They can always come back but for today we are celebrating.

We will go out for lunch and celebrate with our oldest friend of some 40 plus years. Afterwards Bailey will get to play with Eve. And if the tide is out, hopefully I can entice him to go swimming instead of just getting really wet.

Celebration.

I do have two very different videos to share with you. Both are powerful. Both are celebratory in their own way.

The first is Kevin Breel: Confessions of a Depressed Comic at TEDxKids. Now you wouldn't normally think of depression as being celebratable but it worth the 12 minutes of your time especially if you suffer from depression or know someone who does.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3yqXeLJ0Kg&list=PLSatVjzQd2dQUYarOG6sNMNjV0Kw3UTny&index=11

The second is a New Trier Commencement Address, 2013 This is also around 12 minutes long. And I have seen/heard some great commencement speeches. Usually they are the college ones. This is a male high school senior. I say that because stereotypically you might not be surprised if a female had given this speech. Again well worth your time.

Swan: A Very Funny Romantic Novell by Katherine Hole
Publication Date: January 17, 2013
ROMANTIC, FUNNY AND A LITTLE MYSTERIOUS ...

Read the hilarious modern fairytale readers and reviewers describe as "Funny," "Heart-warming" and "Too cool for words!"

From the beginning Madeline's life was a narrative of disappointment and broken dreams. Plump, plain and past her sell by date, happiness and hope were no longer part of her vocabulary. But one day like a bolt from the blue, destiny delivers a massive dose of compensation in the form of David Powell, her strange and elusive neighbour. From the moment they meet, Madeline is plunged into a world of excitement and intrigue where nothing is what it seems. This classic reversal of fortune tale reminds us that ultimately life is a mystery, perfectly able to demolish and reconfigurate even the most hopeless situations.

Please note: This romance contains steamy scenes and is recommended for readers 18+

Dead Men Are Easy To Love
Question: What do Clark Gable, Ernest Hemingway, and Vincent Van Gogh all have in common, besides being famous and dead?
Answer: They all loved Ariel Richards, a modern day time-traveling woman who visited with each of them in the past, and inspired some of the greatest works of their times.

For Ariel Richards, is there any future in the past?
One thing is for certain: She thinks dead men are much easier to love than living ones!

Ariel has bad luck with love. But her present dating woes are only the beginning. Soon she finds herself making mysterious visits to the past, brushing shoulders--and much more--with some of the most famous men, and bad boys, from history . . . Ernest Hemingway, Clark Gable, Beethoven, Dracula, Van Gogh, Butch Cassidy, and others. Will she find lasting romance with any one of them, or will it die before she can find hope for her future?

Twang
The songs Jennifer Clodfelter writes and sings about drinkin', cheatin', lyin', and leavin' aren't from her imagination. With innocence and passion, Jenny pours the pain from her childhood into the lyrics of one Billboard country hit after another. Her manager tells her that confronting those years wrapped in abuse and heartache is a necessary evil, part of the unstoppable force of her destiny to become a country music diva. For a while, Jenny's in heaven. She basks in the spotlight on stage and loves living in Nashville, Tennessee. But soon she begins to find there's a heavy price to pay for such vulnerability. The emotional fallout is staggering when Jenny revisits a certain memory of her teen years. She begins to seriously doubt if the price she's paying to write her hits songs is worth it. Jenny's hairdresser, Tonilynn, sees the wounded little girl beneath the star's on-stage smiles and she attempts to fix Jenny's broken spirit along with her hair. This is a country music diva's song of reconciliation with her dark past.

Dirty Martini - A Thriller (Jack Daniels Mysteries)

Konrath's fourth drink-inspired mystery to feature Lt. Jacqueline Jack Daniels (after 2006's Rusty Nail) is a particularly potent mix of equal parts mirth and mayhem with a dash of sex and a twist (or two) of plot. When an extortionist prefaces his demands for a payoff from the city of Chicago by spreading enough botulism toxin to cause more than 30 deaths, Jack's previous successes and her resultant celebrity are enough to put her in charge of the case. The poisoner has more tricks up his sleeve and unleashes an almost unimaginable arsenal of toxins. Despite a horrific death count, Konrath infuses plenty of humor. Best of all, he gives the reader ample opportunities to stay abreast of or even ahead of his sleuth, but it will take a clever reader to unravel the subtle clues embedded in the story. Konrath's latest should be taken straight, no chaser needed.

Cherry Bomb - A Thriller (Jack Daniels Mysteries)

At the start of Konrath's brisk and breezy sixth Jack Daniels mystery, the guilt-ridden Chicago cop, who's attending the funeral of a loved one, takes a call from Alexandra Kork, the sadistic psychopath who did in the loved one at the end of 2008's Fuzzy Navel (I checked the Weather Channel.... It's raining in Chicago. That's appropriate, don't you think? Funerals on sunny days seem so wrong). Barred from the official hunt for Kork because she's personally involved in the case, Daniels soon finds herself on the wrong side of the law with few of the usual resources to call on. Meanwhile, the wily Kork, who's stopped counting her victims (after 50 they blur), strews bodies over a wide area as part of a scheme to lead Daniels to a slow and painful death. Konrath leavens the violence with offbeat humor, including a feces-throwing monkey in love with a cashmere sweater. The slam-bang ending is sure to satisfy series fans.
