Why can't I get a Kindle copy ALAS, BABYLON? Is it because Audiobooks have some kind of monopoly? I'm not an audiobooks fan---prefer to do my own reading and can't afford them anyway (retired teacher).

Great book. One of my all-time favorites.

It isn't about Audiobooks as "Alas Babylon" is also available in paperback or hardback. This is a publisher issue. You need to contact them.

Quite often, publishers of older books, such as this one, have no contractual ability to publish the book as an ebook. Ebooks weren't even a consideration back when "Alas Babylon" was published and the original publishing contract entered into. If the book is tied up in an estate (Pat Frank is deceased) then getting the contract modified can be problematic. It isn't always as easy as just putting out an ebook. Sometimes the legalities are the real holdup.

Edit:
And sometimes it is just a matter of priorities. Naturally, publishers are going to first convert those books they feel most likely to earn back their investment. With millions of books out there, it will take time and effort before we see every book that we would like to read in ebook form.

and sometimes, like To Kill a Mockingbird and Catcher in the Rye, it's a refusal by the author or the author's heirs
