Can some learned person please advise me if the Kindle Prime set up for borrowing books is available in Australia? I have purchased a Kindle for my elderly mother and was looking at all avenues to borrow books instead of buying them all the time. As yet our local library does not have the facility to lend to a KIndle. Thank You

Loz says:
The Prime service is for the US only. The main perk of it is the 2 day shipping, which isn't available internationally. The lending is a bonus.

I think a lot of libraries here are still coming on board to the lending for kindle though. You can try some other libraries online, it doesn't necessarily have to be your local on.

Actually, at least one other amazon store has Kindle Prime (amazon.co.uk), but right now it has no kindle benefits. I just checked amazon.fr and they have Amazon Premium ( http://www.amazon.fr/gp/subs/primeclub/signup/main.html/ref=footer_prime ) which is basically the same thing. As does amazon.au.

ETA: the amazon.au site Amazon Prime link goes back to the US site, so it's not for australia

however the US does have Amazon Prime: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/subs/primeclub/signup/main.html/ref=footer_prime

Amazon should clearly state who is eligible for its Prime membership. It is very annoying.

Hi from another Aussie. I look forward to when we can borrow ebooks from the local library. What a wonderful day that will be. Meanwhile, I pick up a lot of great reads for free.

There is a fantastic thread with lots of lovely people that lists free ebooks that can be found here:

http://www.amazon.com/forum/kindle/ref=cm_cd_rvt_np?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx1D7SY3BVSESG&cdPage=2&cdThread=Tx59PIHNA353MS#CustomerDiscussionsNew

Or if you use this link below it brings up a list of the top 100 free books. If you are new to kindle it might help to know that it is a good idea to choose the ones that have lots of reviews and a good star average on the ratings.

You can also read a sample of the book to see if you like the writing/style etc. There are a lot of free books out there that I have enjoyed.

Unfortunately, being Australian means we get charged very high prices for traditionally published ebooks. Much more than the US.

You mean like here, where it outlines exactly where they'll ship, and that international addresses are not included?

B. Addison says:
Um, no, because kindle books do not need to be shipped. So it is obvious they won't ship internationally, but that doesn't address the issue of download and streaming.

Prime is a shipping program.

Also, it's "Amazon Prime", not "Kindle" Prime. The main purpose of Prime is free 2 day shipping of qualifying physical products from Amazon. Everything else is just a side-perk.
