Does the Fire HD have a reflective screen or can it be used outside in the sun, say by the pool etc?

All of the Fire models are LCD backlit devices. They are terrible in the sun.

The Basic or the Paperwhite are the two Kindles to consider for outside use. The Paperwhite is good in any lighting situation, from full darkness to bright sun.

Even inside, the e-ink models are better for reading than the Fires. They are lighter, have much longer battery life, and are just plain easier on the eyes for extended reading periods.
