I am thinking of buying a kindle fire for each of my children. Are the books shareable between Kindles or do I need to by each kindle its own books?

If they are registered to the same account, they will both have access to all of the books.

A. Dietz says:
Kindles registered to the same account share all the books on that account. For Kindles on separate accounts, some books can be loaned one time only for 14 days. Details are here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_rel_topic?ie=UTF8&nodeId=200549320

If for some reason you do not want the same account you could also have them swap kindles when they want to read each others books.
