Have you read the product page? Kindle Fire, Full Color 7" Multi-touch Display, Wi-Fi

"On-device Storage 8GB internal (approximately 6GB available for user content). That's enough for 80 apps, plus 10 movies or 800 songs or 6,000 books."

What did it say on the product page when you read it?

Marsha, it may also be worth noting that the 6,000 figure is for books actually downloaded to the device.

I only keep about ten Kindle store books on any of my devices at a time. I find it reasonably easy to download more books from my Amazon archives (called the "Cloud" on a Fire) when needed.

You can also extend the storage with a wi-fi drive, if you like. Here is one example:

I'm gonna go another way, here. The question is a valid one, but the answer is sort of complicated...think, how long is a piece of string?

It depends on what else you have on the Fire. Of the 8 GB, about 2 are needed for the operating system. A bit over one is reserved for apps, that's why it says 'and' after the 80 apps and 'or' between the others. Movies, music, documents, web history and books compete for the remaining 5.37 GB of available space.

I have one movie, two hours of TV, 170 songs, 14 documents and 112 books (a few of which are samples, but several are photo-heavy). My settings currently tell me I have 350.99 MB still available. That's enough for hundreds more books, but probably not enough room for another movie.
