My brother and I bought my mother a Kindle Fire for Christmas. I'll be setting it up for her and since she has asked for some music tracks and a book I'd like to load them on for her in advance. Not having a Kindle myself I'm not usre how this would work with accounts/rights etc. Any help?

you can set it up and preload it, but if she already has a kindle account she won't have access to her books on it and if she registers it to her account, it will be wiped clean of anything you put on it

if she doesn't have one, then you can create one using a gmail (or other email provider), use your credit card to put stuff on it, then pass the email account over to her and let her put her credit card on it

she does have wifi in her house, right?

"if she registers it to her account, it will be wiped clean of anything you put on it"

I do not think that this is correct - I have loaded Kindles and then reregistered them in another account without losing the original content.

Kindle Fire is different from the e-ink Kindles. Fire will be wiped out if it's deregistered.

Thanks for all the input (sorry it's taken me so long to thank you for your responses). A friend suggested I could buy the content as a gift and then download it on the Kindle? Not sure how it would work, but I guess I'll find out.

S. Rothwell - Here's info on gifting books:

You can also give her gift cards that can be emailed to her to arrive Christmas day and she can buy her own content.

Excellent! Looks like that will work for the book she wants.

The key thing is the Amazon account - it must be static -
or, as another pointed out, if you de-register the Fire,
it will be wiped clean of content.... unlike the eReaders.

Also - she will need to have access at some point to WiFi -
either at home, or some hotspot like McD or others.

And lastly - the credit card - either yours or hers -
and this can later be changed on the Amazon website.....
For future gifts - you can gift a specific book... which you pay for, and she gets an email to point to download it via WiFi.
OR - a general purpose Amazon gift card, that she can add to her Amazon account.
