Cathy R. says:
I have mobi and prc books without DRM from a variety of sources, and just noticed that I can't get Kindle for PC to open them. It says this item can't be opened - delete it and redownload it. It's not a huge deal because I have other programs I can use to read the books on my PC, I'm just wondering if anyone else noticed this. I recently got a Windows 7 computer, and so had to reinstall Kindle for PC.

I also use Kindle for PC on a Windows 7 (64 bit) pc and I have no trouble at all opening mobi/prc books from other sources... Have you tried deleting the book from the app and then opening it again by double-clicking the actual file?

Cathy R. says:
It used to open non-Amazon books just fine. Before I got this new computer, Kindle for PC opened any prc or mobi book in addition to Amazon's azw books. Kindle for iPhone and iPod Touch is different because you can't just drag and drop book files onto an iPhone.

In fact, when I installed Kindle for PC, it took the file association for prc and mobi books - in other words, it made it so that when you double-click those files, it tries to open them in Kindle for PC. There's no reason for it to take over those file associations if it would only open azw files.

have you tried using Calibre to convert and then open them?

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 6, 2010 6:37:32 AM PDT
Cathy R. says:
Gayla, there's no need to convert them. They are mobi files. They can be read on the kindle just fine.

My Kindle for PC on a Windows 7 (64 bit) will open the mobi and prc files, but only if I open them while in the program. I can't just double click on the book and open it, that gives me an error message.

Actually something is seriously wrong. It won't even open Amazon content. It registers to my account ok, shows the archive, but when I double click something in the archive, it says it can't open it. I guess I'll have to uninstall it and reinstall it.

Patricia, what do you mean you open then while in the program? File -> Open book is greyed out (I think that's for when you select a book that is already in the program).

When I open Kindle for PC and click on Home, it shows the covers of my books. Double click on the book and it opens.

Patricia, if you have just downloaded something from, say, feedbooks.com, does it automatically show up on your home screen? It doesn't for me.

I've rebooted, uninstalled and reinstalled the software, unregistered and deregistered, and I still can not open my Amazon content or other content... I'm at a loss.

C. Ryan, once you're able to get your Kindle for PC problem straightened out (sorry that I don't have any more suggestions after reading about all you've tried!), if you want to have your feedbooks.com books (or other non-Amazon .prc or .mobi books) show up when you open Kindle for PC, just cut and paste them into the "My Kindle Content" folder that's in your "Documents" folder. (I use cut and paste instead of dragging so I don't have multiple copies of a book on my computer wasting hard drive space.)

Anyone? Ideas? I found a link to version 1.0 (current version is 1.1) and installed that, and it also did not work. I can register, see my archive, try to download one and it says it can't open the book (yet it appears on my home page). Also it can't open other (non-DRM) mobi files on my computer.

It looks like I was wrong about all the books on my Kindle for PC. I thought that some of the books listed came from websites other than Amazon, but I moved some files to the "My Kindle" folder and they don't who up on the Kindle for PC. Kindle for PC Frequently Asked Questions on Amazon.com says "# Automatically save and synchronize last page read and annotations across all your Kindle devices.
# Purchase, download, and read hundreds of thousands of books available in the Kindle Store.
# Access book previously purchased from the Kindle Store". It doesn't say that we can use books from other sites.

I've had this same problem since Oct. 2. It prompted me to reregister my Amazon for PC and all my books won't open, even the ones originally purchased on the Kindle. This is impacting me professionally right now and it's very frustrating. I don't have time to delete and redownload every book. Amazon, please fix this!

Patricia, yes you can read books from other sites on the Kindle for PC program. I do it all the time. They just have to be NON-DRM.

love great lit, have you tried calling Kindle Customer Service for help?

Cathy R. says:
Love great lit, if you DO delete and re-download, does it work then? I can't get books to work at all, even if I delete and try again.

BTW, the title of the thread is now wrong - I realized it won't open ANY books. Actually that's not entirely true - of many Amazon books I've tried, it did open a free book I got a long time ago called Booths' Daughter.

C. Ryan, have you contacted Kindle CS?

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 6, 2010 7:44:26 AM PDT
Cathy R. says:
No, not yet.... I am at work, so I really shouldn't call, and I haven't had great luck with email to CS, but I'll try.

Also, another tidbit - I sent a sample to my Kindle for PC, and it showed up, but when I click on it, it says it can't be opened.

Jean Batson says:
The same thing happened to me. Here's how I fixed it:

1. Deregister Kindle for PC.
2. Uninstall the program.
3. Open a folder in windows explorer. It doesn't matter which folder.
4. On the "tools" menu, click "folder options".
5. Click the "view" tab.
6. Select "show hidden files", and uncheck "hide protected operating system files". You need to do this to show the hidden Amazon file that has become corrupted.
7. Click "okay", and then close that folder.
8. In Windows 7, open the folder "c" (drive), then "users", then your user name. Example, mine is c:>users>jean
9. Then open the folder "AppData"
10. Open the folder "Local"
11. Open the folder "Amazon"
12. DELETE the folder "Kindle For PC". This is where the corrupt file is located.
13. Restart your computer.
14. Reinstall Kindle for PC
15. Register Kindle for PC.
16. Enjoy your books.

Sounds like it could be a registration problem. I would try de-registering and re-registering again.

Edit: Or try Jean Batson's fix. (-:

Cathy R. says:
Jean, I believe I did find those folders and delete them after I uninstalled the software (because I saw that it was "remembering" some things even though I uninstalled). But I'll try it again just to be sure. Flipoid - I've deregistered and reregistered many times. That's not fixing it.
