Is it a USB 2.0 port? It needs to be 2.0.

You may want to try a different USB port.

It is the usb port that came with the kindle and I have no other usb port that matches the kindle. It should work though after all its the one that came with it.

I had this same trouble this morning, poor windows was searching and searching for drivers it didn't need.
Which Kindle?
Typically it's best that an e-ink Kindle be in sleep mode when you connect to pc, but the Fire needs to be AWAKE.

No, I'm talking about the USB port on your computer. When you connect your Kindle to the computer using the USB cable, it (the cable) needs to be plugged into a 2.0 USB port.

When you have it plugged into your computer, you should be able to go to "My computer" and see the Kindle as an external drive.

Ah I see what you mean, most likely my computer has a 2.0 usb drive since It is a new laptop purchased around a year ago and the kindle still charges.I see no kindle as an external drive in computer.

AmeliaAT says:
Okay, yes, it should be a 2.0 port, then.

Do you see the "stop device" icon in your Windows taskbar (I believe it's the same from XP through Vista & 7)? If you do, see if that shows that you have a USB device connected.

If it doesn't, try plugging the cable into a different port. Even really cheap netbooks generally come with at least three USB connections these days. It could be that your computer is looking at the ports in some kind of order and doesn't see it.

If that doesn't work, see whether it makes a difference to shut down the computer, plug in the Kindle, and then restart the computer with the K already attached.

I see no stop device icon on the bottom of my computer,I will try to shut off my computer and do what you have said.

Do you have any other USB devices connected? An external drive or thumb stick maybe? Some versions of windows cause a conflict when two devices try to connect as the same drive letter.

Greg Wright says:
There's 2 different kinds of USB cables. CHARGING ONLY types, and data types. Visually, they are identical. I suspect you are trying to use the former. If you have a cable from an e-ink kindle, I suggest trying that.

I'm glad that you sort of have a solution. I'm sorry that it won't work on your computer! Keep tracking this discussion, since someone may come on who has experience using it specifically with a Vista system.

I hope you enjoy your Kindle!

I have the same issue. New laptop, Windows 7, Amazon e-ink Kindle cable, rebooted, blah blah, still won't recognize that the Fire is attached, but it will charge. Just prior to using trying to connect the Fire I connected a digital camera and a USB harddrive on the same USB port. Same cable works fine with my e-ink Kindle. I'm actually exchanging out the Fire because it came with a screen defect. If I have the same issue with the replacement, I'll contact tech support and see what they have to say.

HELP, Please?!!! I just got my Kindle fire and it did not come with any cords except for the charger. What do I need to connect it to my computer and use my Amazon Wi-Fi?

AmeliaAT says:
You need a USB 2.0 cable with a micro-B connector on one end and a standard one on the other. I don't have a Fire. I found this on the product page: Kindle Fire (Previous Generation - 1st)

You don't need to connect it to a computer to use WiFi. You only need to connect it to a computer if you want to upload local content like pictures or other data that you can't/don't want to put on your cloud drive.

The Kindle Fire does not have drivers to load. Just cancel out of the drivers load and you should be able to use Windows Explorer to explore to it. It may show up as a "Removable Disk". The Fire must not be in sleep mode and you may have slide the yellow "unlock" tab to get the system to recognize that something is plugged into the USB port.
