Kindle Fire HD text to speech

I bought the Kindle Fire HD about a month ago. I loved my previous Kindle that read to me and I could pause and come back to the exact spot I was at and it would continue to read to me. The Kindle Fire's text to speech has several annoying features. 1) If you pause it starts over at the top of the page. 2) If the books is open and you move it the reading stops. 3) If you touch the screen a certain way it stops reading. 4) You can only listen to a female. Anyone else disappointed with the text to speech on the Kindle Fire HD?

Does not what? You have to press Play. TTS is not enabled on every book. Not even on most books.

libby, you have to go to settings at top left and go in and activate the text to Speech before you push play. Folina is correct that not all books have this feature. I've only found a few that don't have it activated. I've only found 1 book so far that won't let you loan your books for 14 days.

What kindle are you using? And not all books have TTS.

Where did you get the book? The publisher has to *enable* TTS; it's up to them. Not all books CAN be read by TTS.

Ralph and Bill...clearing the app data may fix it.

Swipe down from the top of the Home Screen, tap More, then Applications, Installed Applications, tap on Amazon Kindle, then Clear Data.

Same thing happened to me....I had it on most of my books one day and the next day it was gone!!

I have 3 charges on my bank account for 1. book . and then a charge of .99 for who knows what.
I wanted to see if I could use the function but I did not know I had to go to the audio section to open the option so I opted for a refund .
So ... I have the audio book [which shows no text]
Still does not explain how I was able to use it on two books I never purchased audio for. I thought the reading out loud feature came with the Kindle Fire HD when you purchased a kindle book through amazon.
I must be getting too old to work technology.

I don't know who you were "chatting" with, but that person was obviously confused. They are talking about immersion reading, not text-to-speech. Were I you, I'd call - or have them call you - and actually talk to someone. I would also ask for an explanation of the $0.99 charge, because Amazon does not charge for Customer Service.

There are two types of audio.

1) A machine voice that reads but the words are not highlighted. This is great for some technical books and for books that you can't get the audible version for. This is also known as 'Text to Speech' and is available on the Kindle Fire HD free for any book that does not have text to speech disabled (that means it also works for books you send to the Kindle.) I use this a lot (or the equivalent for non-kindle books on an Android phone.)

2) A person reads the book to you. This sounds better, and also highlight the word being read which is supposed to help for technical books (although I've never seen any technical books with that option.) It can be used either within the Kindle app or in an Audible program on the Kindle/PC/Phone/PC/whatever). This is also known as Audible or Immersion reading. If you purchase it with a book, it can be relatively inexpensive and is very nice to have. I have used this for several books and recommend it. I like Dr. Smith being pronounced as Doctor Smith instead of Drive Smith, (although that particular one might be an Android quirk ;)

I contacted Amazon support before reading this and they told me the same thing. I did have to redownload a couple of books and lost the sort order of my carousel, but didn't see any other bad effects from doing this, and it fixed my problem too.

this in incorrect. tts is per publisher not all books have it but I have also found I can have it one day and the next day it is gone????????
