I'd be interested to know if the software update includes the ability for Kindle Fire to connect to peer to peer wifi (as in my phone's hotspot). A few times a year my family visits our country home where there is no internet connection, and that is when the phone's hotspot comes in handy for my netbook and another adroid tablet.

Amazon please include peer to peer wifi connection ability in the forthcoming software update!

My phone will connect to my tmobile mytouch 4g when I use itas a hot spot.... but it sucks the battery of the phone fast to run it as a hot spot.

SeaLevel274 says:
That's not really peer-to-peer. Connecting to your phone's hotspot or to a Mi-Fi device is just regular Wi-Fi from the Fire's perspective.

Pushka says:
The OP said peer to peer as in the mobile phones hotspot.

New update just occurred...takes about four or five minutes. Facebook can be removed. Books can be removed from the Carousel. Screen sliding is smoother. A 'Restrictions' row has now appeared in Settings. System Version reads: Current Version: 6.2.1. That's what I've seen so far.

Not available for me.
I wonder how long it will take to roll them out.

Q says:
I went to the Fire update page at Amazon. The most current update is still 6.2 3003020, so no 6.2.1 available yet from their main download site.

Did your Fire just update itself?

WendyT says:
My Fire just updated itself with no intervention from me (this update is the new version 6.2.1). I had my Fire on and then set it down -- it went to sleep and next thing I noticed, it was updating itself. Others in my family have not gotten the update yet so I would assume it is rolling out gradually. Thank you, John B, for a list of what the update does.

Mine just updated itself to 6.2.1. Really not noticing too much difference here.

Yes, mine updated by itself.

@ Campbell -

-----

just to clarify - technology terms are very specific in their meaning..... you have mixed apples and oranges. A WiFi device may connect to a fellow "peer" or to "an access point". Your home WiFi, or any normal hotspot is of course an "access point".

A "peer" is when two WiFi devices want to connect "ad hoc" and NEITHER is capable of operating as "an access point". This would be similar to connecting via Bluetooth.

Your cellphone is acting as "a WiFi access point" for usually up to 5 devices, and not a peer or ad hoc connection.

Peer or ad hoc is usually referring to "tethering."

Now when I go to device it says there's a Max of 1.17 Gb for applications??????

Ernie says:
Yeah, it expressly tells you how much memory for apps remain.

~nospin says:
Oh, okay.
I thought that might be where they are putting parental controls.
Just wanted to pass along the info if that was the case.

Has there been any change to the reader?

Ernie says:
Not that I can see. What change were you looking for, Nospin?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 19, 2011 2:48:00 PM PST
~nospin says:
There were complaints about the size of a new Android app update they rolled out to phones.
I was curious whether there was anything there that might have been for the
Fire.

I plan on having 95% apps on my fire, wtf, 1/8th of my space isn't going to be enough.....

5.65mb as reported on my Fire.

You get a total of 1.17gb for apps.

Georgia Tuss says:
The new "Restrictions" category in in the setup menu allows you to lock WiFi connect behind a discrete password. Should make a few folks that are clamoring for Parental Controls happy!
