A few folks including myself have for some reason received our Kindle Fire HDX ahead of schedule. What do you think so far?

I pre-ordered after I read a bunch of first impressions on different tech sites and thought it would be a real upgrade to the Kindle Fire HD from last year.

Here's what I think so far
- huge improvement of the power and volume buttons. There is no guessing or fumbling for the buttons
- love that it's so much lighter and feels less clunky
- beautiful new design
- I bought the ad supported HDX and as with the Fire HD, it doesn't bother me. Once you unlock the screen, ad goes away
- beautiful graphics

The one thing I wish they would improve is that for me at least I find it to easy to advance the page when I am just trying to swipe up to get the home page button.

Other than that, so far the kid in me is happy to get it early.

I hope they made the streaming player better. And the volume a little higher!

You may it sooner. I was given 10/18 too. It does feel really good to hold. I reading a book on Jodi Arias and not really paying attention to holding it. I m curious why they are sending them early though

I was curious and compared it my 2012 Kindle HD, it seemed a little lower but the sound quality is still good. I plan to use headphones with it so I don't think it will be too much of an issue.

Doe's it support flash player?

Oh jeez. Once again, devices do not "support" Flash, it's the programmers of Flash who must support a device. And as of last year, Adobe (the makers of Flash) announced they were stopping support for Android devices

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 12, 2013 5:33:39 PM PDT
From what I have seen on the web, it will not. I thought I saw on a few tech sites that Adobe is not providing Flash for Android. There may be a way to still side load it.

Got mine today. Disappointed that there is still no Silk text size scaling. Pinch/zoom doesn't cut it, there needs to be a setting that allows increasing the text size and having the browser display pages with the larger font so you don't have to pinch/zoom. Just like in the Kindle book reading app.

Overall, speed is great, screen is great. Can't yet decide if I will keep it or return it and continue using my Kindle Fire (non-HD). Interestingly, the HDX is actually wider than my old KF, but it is thinner and lighter.

Any one get the Origami case? I'd like to see thoughts on that I haven't decided whether or not to keep my pre-order for my 8.9 origami case.

I am also waiting to see reviews on the oragami case. The case I have preordered is due to arrive November 7th, and the HDX 4G won't be out until December.

My Fire will be here on the 18th and I still haven't decided on a case. I was going to wait for reviews. The origami case looks interesting but pricey. Have also been looking at the Supcase. I'm hoping in the interim that my new Fire will fit into the Built sleeve I have been using for my original Fire.

I have never had any kind of ereader until I got a new tablet with the free kindle app on it and downloaded it to my computer, android smart phone Samsung and my Samsung tablet through Amazon I am not experienced with all this new technology. Trying to get used to not reading a regular book. My question is why do you need to buy a kindle when u can just download the app and read it 3 different ways. Also I keep losing my page and cant find it The page numbers are different on the tab then phone and it says go to the last place that u read and it goes to the end of the book. I am still not sure I like it. It takes too long to find out where I left off and the bookmarks do what? Hope someone can help or tell me what is a good reason to buy a kindle and which kind is the best. I don't need fancy. Thanks Anyone want to sell their old Kindle if its in good condition. I live in Largo Florida next to Clearwater.

Maybe that's why u need a Kindle. They don't skip.If u just want a reader, the Kindle paper white is cheaper for u.If u want games and movies, the Kindle Fire HD or the new one, with the x added to it might be better for u.Then u gotta decide if u want the 7 or 8.9 inch one.I've found for me,the little one is better for my hand.

regarding the new 8.9 Fire HDX, how many of what ports does it have. I assume there would be no difficulty attaching an external USB3 hard drive ?? ... (fire wire?) HDMI?

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 13, 2013 5:30:13 PM PDT
It is weird at first not having an actual book at first. I like you had the app on my iPad which was difficult to read on. I wanted to try an eReader and since a Prime member, a Kindle made a a great choice. You get tons of functions on a Kindle that you don't get in the app love X-Ray. I would agree that if you just want an eReader, the Paper White would be a great choice.

I really like how the HDX 7' feels when I hold it. I plan to get a case for when I am out and about. I don't really use the case I bought ford he Kindle Fire HD 2012. The origami case does look really cool but a little pricey for me if I don't plan to use a case when at home.

Helge - No Android devices running the Jelly Bean OS can use Adobe Flash. Adobe Flash is a dying format for web video, and is being replaced by HTML5 (Which the Kindle Fire HDX will support).

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 13, 2013 5:40:53 PM PDT
Wes - The Fire HDX has only a micro USB port, and the port has no hosting capabilities. If you want to use a USB drive or a memory card with it, you'll need a device like this one:

Kingston Digital MobileLite Wireless Flash Reader for Smartphones and Tablets (MLW221)

For those of you who have the HDX maybe you can answer a few questions for me:

Reading the description of the HDX on Amazon's site, it was said to have a built in officesuite and at first a youtube app called Firetube. About two weeks into it amazon took the firetube app description out and left the youtube portion in, saying it was easy to bookmark and find videos, which lends me to think there is some sort off app sort or built in video functionality.

After going to best but today and seeing a display model of the HDX, I saw no built in officesuite or youtube/firetube anything. Have you seen these apps or functionalities? No mention of them on the reviews either. If there is no youtube/firetube, why advertise it, Amazon?

Thanks for the help.

I don't know which office suite may be on the HDX but Kingsoft Office, Polaris Office and Smart Office are full featured office products with edit and create functions compatible with Word, Excel and Power Point which are free. There are others like OfficeSuite Pro and Documents to Go which are available for $15.

Could one of you please post the dimensions of the actual viewing portion of the screen on the new HDX 7"? (Not including the black-colored glass.)

The old Kindle Fire measures 6 1/16 x 3 9/16".

The previous-version Kindle Fire HD measures 5 15/16 x 3 11/16".

How does this new 7" screen compare to the older ones?

Retired EE says:
All 7 inch screens are 7.0 inches from corner to corner diagonally. The width and height are controlled by the aspect ratio. The HDX resolution is 1920x1200 and has an aspect ratio of 16x10. The diagonal for 16x10 is 18.868. That means the width is 7x10/18.868=3.71 and the height is 7x16/18.868=8.25. The HD aspect ratio is 1024/600 or 17.07x10. The diagonal is 19.783. The screen is slightly wider and slightly shorter. How much of the screen is actually available for content is controlled by the tablet electronics.
