Need feedback from those with the older Fire HD (with Camera) and 7" HDX and/or 8.9" HDX

I currently own a 7" HD w/Camera purchased in 4/2013. I recently purchased a 7" HDX. I experienced the "blue haze" some have posted about and it was quite bad, unfortunately. However, worse than that I noticed when I first turned it on that the black background was no longer dark black but a MUCH lighter gray color. I hoped that by adjusting the brightness I'd be able to get back the nice deep black I had on my Kindle Fire HD. I adjusted the brightness and turned off auto brightness but I had no luck in getting anything but a lighter gray background. It meant that the icons/pictures of the apps and games etc on the carousel didn't "pop" as much as they did on my HD. Don't get me wrong the detail is beautiful on the HDX but the contrast wasn't as great between the light gray vs the dark black of the HD's screen.

Worse than that though was when I went to read a book. I often read at night and use the white text on a black background. When I did this with the HDX it was horrible. The light gray screen was not as much of a contrast against the white letters as the dark black background was. If I turned up the brightness all it did was make the screen a LIGHTER shade of gray with even less contrast and really washed out the text.

I called Amazon customer service and explained about the "blue haze" etc. I got the "it's normal, it's the blue LED back lighting" routine. I don't doubt that is might be the LEDs but why they would think anyone would "like" that blue haze was beyond me. On mine it wasn't just that it was a blue line it was a blotchy haze that stuck out further than any back lighting I'd ever seen. I ended up getting to a technical support person who had me try some things and then he left me on hold and said he adjusted the software and had me do a reset. It didn't help. He said the two things actually could be related if the LED black lighting was not straight it could cause the blotchy effect and it could cause the light gray screen if the back lighting couldn't properly and evenly back light the screen (which I hadn't thought of). He asked me to send it back and sent me a new one.

I got the new one but unfortunately, it still has problems. The "blue haze" is there but not as bad. It's more uniform and not as "blotchy". However, the light gray screen is still there the same as the first one.

My question to people and my reason for the feedback is the following. Is the background on the Kindle Fire HDX 7" (or 8.9" HDX if you have it) as dark as the Kindle Fire HD 7" (w/Camera) or is it MUCH lighter? If you have both it should be very obvious even when first turning it on and looking at the background behind the carousel and certainly if you open a book and change the background to black with white text. Unless my HD is much different than most I see a very clear difference in that the 7" HDX background is much lighter gray than it is black like the HD. I'm curious about the 8.9" as well simply because if the 7" HDX is found to most people to have a lighter gray background and not the deep black, and this is deemed "normal", and the 8.9" HAS the darker 'black' background like the HD, then I'd consider upgrading to the 8.9" HDX. I've "heard" that the 8.9" HDX doesn't suffer from the "blue haze" issue because they didn't use the blue LEDs for back lighting like they did on the 7" HDX. Not sure why that would be true since if the reason was for the 100% accurate color why would the 7" HDX need the blue LEDs and the 8.9" HDX wouldn't?

If anyone is willing to take a moment and give me their impressions on the background on the 7" HDX and/or 8.9" vs the Fire HD (w/camera) I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks. Sorry, this is long but I wanted to get the point across as to what I'm looking for. These issues may not be bothersome to some people but spending this kind of money on a tablet I'd like to get one I'm going to enjoy. Other than the "blue haze" and black background issue I like the 7" HDX.

There are a few quirks I wish they hadn't changed but over all like it. The Second Screen and Miracast features work very well and it's nice to connect without a cable.

I'm returning the first 7" HDX tomorrow and I'll be talking to customer service probably tomorrow as well. I need to decide if I'm going to be sending back the 2nd one for a refund and get the 8.9" or just send the 7" back and maybe look elsewhere tablet wise. I know I could just return both of the 7" HDXs and buy a 8.9" and if I don't like that one just send it back as well for a refund but I'd really rather not go through all that just to find out it's just like the 7" and that's "normal". I've already gone though 2 Kindles and I don't think I want to even try yet another one. Because of that I don't even really want to try the 8.9" since I have a feeling it's not going to be any different. I think they probably just made a slight color/brightness/contrast change between the HD and the HDX and I just happen to really, really not like it. But, I'll wait til I hopefully get some feedback and see what happens. Thanks in advance for any help. Again, sorry for the length.

I just looked at my 8.9 HDX and the background is VERY dark gray/almost black. I have the original Fire and a 8.9 HD but they are at home - so I couldnt compare them. I also read white letters on dark background and have had no problem with the HDX.

Laura, thank you very much for responding! I was hoping that the 8.9" HDX background was dark and not a light gray like I've seen on the two 7" HDXs I've gotten now. I have a feeling that's just the way the 7" HDX is and was hoping the 9" HDX was different. I realize everyone see's and perceives things a little different and what is ok for one person may not be acceptable to another. The difference was just SO drastic when I first powered on the 7" HDX compared to my HD that I noticed it right away.

If you get a chance and you feel like it when you get home, could you please take a moment and look at your 8.9" HD (and maybe even the original Fire for the heck of it) and see if it's the same as your 8.9" HDX. That would be a big help in my comparison. Thanks again. I may just give the 8.9" HDX a try when it goes on sale next time.

I have seen problem I could not fix the blue haze and I just cannot read on black background. I could not make a way of fixing that I tried to call mayday at end. They told me to reset ... obviously did not work.
So still can't read with black background

I too read only with the black background with white letters, usually at night with the brightness turned all the way down. The difference from an original Fire to the HDX is very noticeable, the screen is a light grey with white letters. I really cant stand it, and have gone to a third party reading application and am forced to find books outside of the amazon marketplace.
I don't understand why turning the system brightness down makes the background brighter, and hope this will be addressed with the version 4 update.

If I hadnt given away my original Fire I would go back to it for reading, it was much better in the dark.

I don't understand why neither you Paulo, or you Clinton didn't return your device, there is no reason to keep an Amazon device if you don't like had a 30 day no questions asked return window. You can still get a replacement, as the warranty is in effect.

I have a HDX 7" and do not have this issue.

I can't speak for other's but I did return the 7" HDX I purchased when I found the background was no longer a dark black (like the HD 7" I have) but instead at best a grey color. On my HD 7", when turning up the brightness when reading with a black background with white letters, the white letters would really "pop" right off the page. It was great for reading at night without the glare / brightness of a white or tan screen. I decided to return the HD 7" and try a 8.9" HDX and see if it was the same, and it was. Since this new / different background color is on both the home screen and the book reading background (when you choose the black background with white letters. I assumed it was just a change Amazon had made in the color scheme when going from the HD to the HDX. Now, when I'd turned up the brightness when reading on a black background with white letters the letters didn't get brighter...the washed out grey background just got a brighter, more washed out grey which further served to wash out the white text instead of making the text brighterr. That's fine, again, it was Amazon's choice. I just really don't care for it when trying to read with a black background at night with white letters. I also read enough comments online here to understand that it wasn't a bad unit (or two bad units...both a HDX 7" and the replacement HDX 8.9"), it was a change that was made and that's just the way the HDX units are. It's unfortunate for those of us that liked the dark black background vs the washed out grey but that was Amazon's decision. I did get rid of the blush / purplish haze around the outside edge by returning the HDX 7 and getting the HDX 8.9 which is good. I also find I really do like the larger screen now that I have it especially for movies and games.
