Just tried to order 2 free books for my grandchildren and they can only be downloaded to a Kindle Fire. First time I have run into this. Is this going to be Amazon's way of getting you to purchase the newest Kindle?

Which books?

I'm thinking, maybe they are color books and since the Fire is the only color Kindle that is the reason. What are the books.

Looks like some books are being made to take advantage of the Fire's capabilities. There are still plenty of books for the e-ink Kindles.

Animalphabet features bright colored pictures - only the Fire can display those. The other one might, as well.

Just on a quick look, it seems that these books are in fact only available on the Fire. But it's not some plot by Amazon to get you to buy a Fire. Amazon doesn't write or publish these books. The authors format and sell them as they chose, Amazon is just the store.

It's likely they are only sold (note that they are "sold" for free right now) for the Fire because they are picture books which wouldn't look nearly as interesting on a B&W e-ink Kindle.

I just bought this book and looked at it on the Fire. It is very nice but wouldn't be so nice if it weren't in color.

I think the better question is why they are not available for the other apps. The Fire uses the Android app so all devices running Android should be able to use it as well. Since it is free I will mess with it and see if I can't get it to work.

Edit: Won't let you buy without having a Fire on the account.

I have downloaded other kids e-books that are in color and there were no restrictions on them.

So, what do you want us to do? It is not available so move on or buy a Fire if it is that important to you.

These are examples of the Fire exclusive childrens books introduced back in November. They don't work in the eInk Kindles or the Apps becasue they are using the new Kindle Format 8 that is currenly only in the Fire. There is still no word on when the apps or the eInk Kindles will be updated to accept KF8.

These might be Kindle Format 8 books and at this time only the Fire supports them (no eInk Kindles or apps support KF8). It has been speculated that other Kindle's/Apps will get updated to support KF8, but none do so far.

E-ink devices and android devices run on two completely different operating systems. Restrictions based on compatibility are not new. Otherewise, you could still play Commodore 64 games on your current computer!

Your expectation is what's lame.

I think it's lame I can't play my Super Nintendo games on my Playstation. THAT IS SO LAME!

Lyn, it does seem strange. If it was just a matter of displaying in color, the Kindle for PC and Kindle Cloud Reader would be able to do that.

Gee, I guess I should get upset because I can't play 3D HD Blu-ray videos on my VCR attached to a 19 inch black and white TV.
