Can you get to google play on the Kindle Fire HD or is there a way around to get to it?

Posted on Oct 8, 2012 5:38:30 PM PDT
No. You can use different appstores, though, like and Also if you have another Android device that does have access to the Google Play store you may be able to sideload apps copied from that device.

It's getting sad. 1mobile and getjar just direct you to Google's Android app store, which won't allow you to register the Kindle. And if you do install apps on another competing tablet, they manage to completely hide the .APK files from you, so there's nothing to sideload, either. It's tough to find .apk's floating around in the wild, too. You can probably get to the movies and music through the browser, though, just not the apps.

Frankly, I don't know what you're talking about. Just sideloaded an app from getjar earlier today.

"1mobile and getjar just direct you to Google's Android app store"

No, they don't. I have both the GetJar and the 1mobile apps installed on my Fire and can download new apps directly from their wesbites.

They do on mine! Both 1 and GetJar and the Go store updated their store apps a couple of months ago, and now if I try to update my apps, when I click the UPDATE it goes off to Google. The browser comes up and because I don't have an account or device there, Google doesn't let me download. Maybe those other ones still work for the initial app download and not the updates. That's what I get for keeping everything right up to date, I guess. I haven't tried to download anything new lately...just the updates...and that's where it pawns me off on Google again. Sorry, maybe it's just me experiencing this.

Hmmm.... I'll have to play around with that later tonight. A lot of the apps I got from both sites, I am not too fussed about updating, as they work fine as they are.

Wondering says:
How long ago did you try to download something from GetJar? I got my Kindle Fire within the last month and had no problem installing GetJar and then B&N's Nook app directly from GetJar itself. I even updated the Nook app earlier today with no problems. Maybe it's only certain apps that direct you to Google's Play Store?

It's been like this for about three months. After I installed three different "stores", my apps got out of sync with Amazon's versions. So all three stores kept telling me updates were available. I put them on until I realized they were all out of sync with each other! Then...the 1 and GJ store apps themselves updated themselves and since then they seem to go to Google for everything since then. I kinda wished I knew this was going to happen beforehand. My intent was to install Dolphin HD and keep that up to date...but now the only way I can get that to update is to go to Dolphin's developer's blog and download from there, also my Go Launcher suite of products can only be updated from their developer's blog.

It is possible I slipped up along the way and caused this myself by having too many app stores loaded all at once. And by slavishly keeping up with all the updates without watching the version numbers to make sure they really were "updates".

However now I get notifications from the various stores that there are updates...and they all now go directly to Google's Android market, except for the ones I got from Amazon. And the ones also on Amazon cheerfully request me to install version 1.2 on top of version 1.3 that I got from someplace else! A bit of a mess.

New Kindle Fire HD 8.9 in hand and regret it already....I wanted to have dishonline app added, but can't. Amazon needs to make peace or sync up with Google play...ugh.....

Amazon wants apps to display "on your Kindle," instead of "on your Android," so many apps have to be rewritten especially for Kindle.

Not judging the good or bad of it, just saying.

GetJar would not complete the install of Google Play apps on my Fire HD when I tried it last week. They showed up in search, but the installs kept failing. It appears that they are being blocked from the Kindle's end.

I found another Play apps .apk source (direct download) and tried that, but then I ran into a different problem:

Since the Kindle will not allow you to register the device to your Google account, none of the Play apps work with anything you're stored under your Google account ("on The Cloud"). The only way they work is if you load the files via USB, and frankly, they're not as good as other apps (including the Amazon native ones) just to listen/watch/read. The whole reason I wanted Play Music is that they store all 16,000 of my songs for free on the Cloud, and Amazon wants to charge me for that.

I wish there was some way around it, but Google will have to figure that out, and for all I know they have an agreement with Amazon not to do it.

No, you need to decide what is important to you and then get a device that has what you want. Pretty simple actually.

I had the same problem when I tried to install Zinio so that all my magazine subscriptions would be in one place. I had Zinio on my first Kindle Fire, but it wouldn't install on the Fire HD because it required Google Play, and I couldn't install Google Play.

Sometimes one purchases a product and there's no way to know that one particular app, such as Zinio, will not work.

Contact Zinio about this. They have worked with Amazon customers in the past. They have even posted on these boards.

OK, Jeff, I'll do that; thanks!

Many looking for sources for apps to install on the Fire might find this article interesting/helpful:

I know what you mean about problem getting Zinio. I finally got Zinio from Zinio is under the "magazine" category.

I did some research before buying, but this aspect eluded me. Don't assume that because it's android (highly modified) that it's any kind of "open" system. They've clearly adapted it to yhe Apple business model. I wish I'd known this sooner. As the CNET review says (my parentheses):

"If you're looking for a pure [Amazon] media consumption experience, the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 delivers better than any tablet before it. People looking for something more utilitarian, however, will want to look elsewhere."

Watson - Try instead. GetJar has been more "locked down" for the Kindle Fire lately.

1mobile has just about everything you could want and they do not send you to google play, nor does getjar. I don't know what kind of setup anyone has that gets sent there from these two sites, but I've been using them now since november 2011 and they work just great. Sometimes, 1mobile might have something that won't work on the kindle but it tells you or it will work but not well. I've cut google out of my life since they're so nasty.

I'm glad that Amazon has it's own Appstore and that I can get apps from other places besides Google, too. Google shouldn't have a monopoly on Android apps.
