on my original kindle at the bottom were lines showing the chapters, I liked that as i knew when I was coming to the end of one so i could stop to do housework lol, the paperwhite just shows percentage of book read, is there a way of showing the chapter breaks?

no, the last kindle that had that (and still has it) was the smell cheap Basic Kindle

the equivalent is the time left to end of chapter

CBRetriever says:
tap on the % and toggle through the options (if you have the latest update and the book has real page numbers, you even have the option for those to show)

oh, thanks, that's clever, I've only had it a few days and still navigating my way around, much different from a standard kindle and touch screen is odd after using other one for so long.

I am trying to help my Mom with her Paperwhite Kindle. We downloaded a book months ago and she just started to read it. After she starts reading the first chapter it goes back to Prologue. I tried going to chapters, that didn't work, then I completed the book and it still doesn't work. Can you guide me to correcting this. My Mom is 92 there her daughter is not a tecky. Thanks

Which book? It could be a formatting issue with the book.

I would delete the book and re-download as a first step.

I would also, download another book (even a free one) to see if it is a book issue or a device issue.

You can also use the page flip feature to get a visual as to how much longer to the next chapter. To employ it, tap the top of the screen, then tap the rectangular box that will appear at the bottom. Within that bottom box, tap on the right-most arrow. That takes you to the start of the next chapter. The top right x that appears in the box in the center will take you back to where you left off in the book. That box also allows you to navigate within the chapter that was pulled up when you tapped the bottom rectangle.
