I must be missing something obvious.

long pressing the home button in the applications does not display a list of recent apps. how does one switch between apps without going to home screen.

You can use the back arrow at the bottom to go back to your App shelf.

I have had my Fire for 1 day now and NOT being able to switch between running apps is an issue. Using the back arrow just sends you back within the context from which you came.

The alt-tab (windows os) like functionality of other android based devices allows you to switch between two active files or applications.

Put your frequently used apps in Favorites. Tap home and tap icon you want to go to.

If you find it too cumbersome and cannot adapt to pushing two icons instead of two buttons simultaneously after trying it out for a week or two, send it back.

I think, Amazon is using the carousel to largely fulfill that purpose.

I too am finding this cumbersome. I love the Kindle Fire, but switching back and forth between two apps frequently using the back-arrow and/or Home button is very time consuming and frustrating.

I have long since moved to cyanogenmod for the fire. Much better now.

The ability to switch between applications is the most frustrating issue I've found in my one day of owning the kindle fire.

The kindle fire hdx supports this. It was one the first things I had to figure out when it arrived today. When inside of an application swipe up from the bottom of the screen and a tray will pop up with the currently running applications.
