Mary W. says:
I have a kindle fire HDX and can't use it. Is there a paper book that I can hold in my hand and read to figure out how to use this thing before I start using it for target practice???????

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 11, 2014 7:37:17 AM PDT
No. But it's *ON* the HDX. Swipe down from the top, choose Settings, then Help, then User Guide.

Hi Mary,

No, you're not stupid! Any new thing needs a learning curve!

You'll find that a Users Guide has been preloaded onto your Fire. You'll find it under Apps, I think. Look for the big blue question mark.

You can also click "Help" on top of this screen, then click on the picture of the Kindles/Fires. You'll see tips, videos, tutorials, and other information there, as well as the Users Guide. Sometimes it's easier to look at another screen while you're learning the features of your Fire as you go along.

Here is a link to the users guide. You can read it on your computer with the HDX in front of you. (also, it has a Mayday button which will get you immediate help from Amazon)

Actually, I tried looking at that. That's just the quick start card in like 11 languages. The instructions on that same page direct the user to the on-board manual.

Mary W. says:
Thanks for the help but I don't have wireless where I live. So I don't have much luck there. So I'll ask...Can I download books to the Kindle from my computer?

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 11, 2014 7:46:20 AM PDT
New Girl says:
Oops, I never even looked. I clicked on the link for the users guide and copied the URL. My bad. Well I think Mayday is the best bet unless she hasn't even gotten online yet.

I can't use the user's guide unless I connect to wireless which I can't do.

New Girl says:
You are going to have to get somewhere that has wireless at least once. Is there a McDonalds or Starbucks or someplace with free wifi you can go to. You clearly have access to the internet since you are posting here. What are you using for this?

The User's Guide is ON the Fire. On it. In it. You don't need wireless to see it.

Swipe down from the top with your finger. Swipe down from the top, choose Settings, then Help, then User Guide.

But honestly, without wi-fi, a Fire is pretty much useless. But yes, you can sideload your books. How are you on the internet to post here?

ETC typo

Beth says:
Yes you can.
When you buy a book choose the option transfer via computer rather then send to your kindle.
You will be directed to save a file.
Then you hook a cable between your Fire and your computer.
Your Fire will show as an external drive.
You just drag the file into the correct folder. Which since I don't own a HDX I do not know whether it is labelled books or documents (sorry).

edited to correct than/then

Mary W. says:
I have registered the thing. I have been on line but can't do anything with it because I don't know how to do anything because I don't have any instructions. I would like to download some books from Amazon so I can read them even if I am not connected to wireless. Can I do that?

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 11, 2014 7:52:32 AM PDT
Yes. Read the post above yours just now.

I am using my desk top computer.

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 11, 2014 7:56:59 AM PDT
Okay, but how are you getting on the internet? It's not a wi-fi signal? If you're still using an ethernet cable, then you'd follow the directions Beth posted above.

Are you replying via email? It might be easier and more coherent if you navigate here to the actual thread and can see the posts and replies in order.

If you are on a pc, here's a handy video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QIrOoGV54k

Mary W. says:
Ok, I'll try this. Thanks you. A friend gave this kindle to my husband who lives in a very remote area thinking he could use it but there is no WIFI in his area so books is the only thing we can do with it. thanks again.

Mary W. says:
To be honest I have no idea what you are talking about. I have a home desk top computer that is not wireless.

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 11, 2014 8:01:44 AM PDT
"...not wireless..."

That's what I was wondering. So, yeah. You can put books on the Fire by following the directions Beth gave. Watch that YouTube video, too; it's very helpful and explains how to do it.

Beth says:
Mary- if you have a computer you can get wireless. It is a box you hook up between whatever you have your computer hooked to and your computer. It changes the signal you already have coming into the house into a signal transmitted throughout the house. it is completely different than cell phone service.

Mary W. says:
Will I tried it and of course it did not work...I think. It may be on my computer but I can't figure out how to download it to the Kindle or where it is hiding on the computer. Any one, can you help?

Mike says:
It would seem that you need to talk with Kindle customer service, and have them talk you through the process.

Really, though, Mary: install a router. Without ready access to WiFi, you have an expensive paperweight.

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 11, 2014 8:31:53 AM PDT
Mary W. says:
You are right about the paperweight. However, it was not meant for my use at home. It was for my husband. I'll call Kindle customer service and see if they can help. Thanks you.

Search for the title on your computer.

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 11, 2014 8:38:31 AM PDT
It, what? Are we still talking about the User Guide? That is NOT on the computer, but ON the Fire itself.

What we got to talking about was when you download books TO your pc (at some point), you have to know how to move them to the Kindle.

But the User Guide is still only accessed ON the Fire itself.
