Folks,

Several people have reported a problem with the Silk Browser when trying to use the keyboard to enter passwords. Even if you have not encountered the problem, you should follow the procedure below.

() When you receive your KFHD you will go through a fairly lengthy setup process to establish a wifi connection, register the KFHD if it's not already registered to your account, and other housekeeping tasks.

() When you've completed those tasks, perform a "reboot" (sometimes called a "hard reset." Press and hold the power button until the KFHD shuts down on its own. Ignore the "shutdown" question that appears on the screen.

() Once the KFHD is shut down, press the power button again to boot it.

At that point the KFHD will boot and should apply a software update automatically to your device. A brief message will appear on your screen to that effect.

By the way, those of us with long experience with the original KF and other Android devices (including the Nexus 7) have found that it's a good idea to "reboot" your device periodically. Doing so will prevent the accumulation of "crap" that takes up RAM and slows or ultimately freezes the device as the OS tries to juggle demands on it.

Takes only a few seconds and once or twice a week will "keep your room clean."

P.S. By the way, I cannot confirm that the hard reset is required to get the software update. Simply shutting off the KF (answer the shut down question "yes") may well get you the software update when you start the KFHD again. However, many of us discovered that there was a difference between the "hard reset" and the standard shutdown procedure in terms of clearing RAM effectively. Since the same issue arises on the Nexus 7, I'm inclined to think it lives on in this version of the KFHD so I'm suggesting the "hard reset" (reboot) procedure rather than simply shutting off the screen (i.e. sleeping) or responding yes to the shutdown question.

Edit: Bruce Boyle notes below that his KFHD already had the update installed when he received it. That suggests that my initial assumption that everyone needs to do this was incorrect. If you're not sure (and especially if you encounter odd behavior in the Silk browser, though, it can't hurt.

Just FYI, mine already had the update installed, so not everyone will see it update when they do this.

Thanks jsh1120. How will you know if you have the update or not?

Just follow the procedure outlined above. You won't hurt anything by running it. If you already have the update you won't see a splash screen announcing it, I assume.

Well, aren't you special! I have no idea what proportion of the KFHD's out today are in each category and I doubt there's any way to know what makes the difference. The most obvious test is the use of the keyboard in the Silk browser. If you experience problems there, you need a software update.

My version shows 7.1.5.
I love the keyboard on this compared to the old Fire.

My new Kindle Fire HD keyboard wouldn't work on web forms but a hard boot resolved it. Thanks for the tip!

Is anyone having problems with the music player? I downloaded a music sample from the mp3 store but it won't play.

I believe you can only stream samples.
Mine works great.
