Welcome to Free books and Chat. come on in and browse through the links there are always lots of free books. Have a seat in our overstuffed chairs and put you feet up on the hassocks as settle yourself in to read the latest treasure you've dredged up out of thousands of free indie publishers or perhaps you were lucky enough to catch one of your favorite well know author's book while it was free.

There's coffee, tea and hot chocolate in the decanters on the counter. On the counter there's a variety of freshly baked jelly and cream filled doughnuts apple fritters and I tripled the order of maple bars because they were so popular. Ice cold milk...whole lowfat skim and soy....is in the fridge beneath.

Leo
Here is a little story I wrote an hour ago...

Selfless Love

Malcolm Baker wiped the sweat from his brow as he bent his head to his work. He'd had to reupholster the same chair three times for the persnickety old lady whose work had landed on his work station. His boss glared at him across the shop as four other pieces waited for Malcolm's attention.
Malcolm gritted his teeth as he tacked the cover to the underside of the chair, under constant scrutiny of the old woman. Nothing seemed to please her. Malcolm had to bite his tongue to keep from telling her off. He knew that would end his job for sure. He felt though that if he spent anymore time with this piece the boss would fire him anyway. He thought about his family at home and remembered the eight months he been out of work. They'd had to stay with his wife's family. His Mother-in-law had been on his back every day about getting job even though he walked several miles each and every day looking. Without a job he couldn't afford to ride the bus. Not with a two year old son and another baby on the way.
Malcolm concentrated on his work, making sure every tuck and fold was even as he finished to the nods of the old woman.
"Well that'll have to do." She said.
"Yes ma'am. I'll just put this in the back of your truck for you."
After the old lady left, the boss walked over.
"Took you long enough. You better clean up I ain't payin' for overtime and I'll expect you to get caught up tomorrow."
Malcolm knotted his fists, but he held them at his sides and didn't say a word. His boss had done business with Mrs. Jarbo many times. He knew there was no pleasing that woman. Malcolm wanted to grab the shorter and much thinner man by the collar and shake him, but he held it in as he swept up the bits of leather and cloth and dumped them in the trash bin.
All along he whispered under his breath. "I need this job...I need this job...I need this job."
The sun beat on the back of his neck as he walked the six blocks to the bus stop and waited. It was 108 in the shade. Who knew how hot it was standing on the blacktop until the next bus came thirty minutes late. The express bus had broken down and so he had to take the metro, which turned his normal Twenty minute bus ride into an hour and a half. Luckily the bus's air conditioner did work, but with all the stops it never got cool enough to feel. Malcolm could have almost walked home by time the bus let him off three blocks from his house.
Malcolm sighed as he climbed the stairs to his two bedroom apartment.
I'm home he thought, then he opened the door.
The house was a complete mess. His now three year old son was screaming at the top of his lungs as his wife was rocking his four month old sleeping daughter.
Malcolm nearly lost his temper as he stared around the room wondering why he put himself through the daily tortures his boss put him through.

But that is only half of the story.

Much, much earlier that morning around 2 am the baby woke up. She wouldn't eat and her forehead was warm but not hot. Maria changed her diaper and tried to settle her with a bottle, but little Sarah wouldn't have any of it.
Hours passed with the baby settling down for a minute or two and then fussing as soon as Maria tried to get up. Somewhere around 5:45 am little Sarah finally conked out, but Maria knew her hard working husband needed his breakfast and a packed lunch. She scrambled some eggs added some toast and then made him a couple of ham sandwiches with a sweet roll and a thermos of milk.
Malcolm woke up at six, ate and was out the door by six-thirty. Maria thought she might be able to get a hour or two of sleep when Michael, their three year old son wandered into the bedroom and crawled up next to her.
"Mommy I got a go...ut oh."
He had already taken off his pull ups, but her ever loving husband had forgotten to put the potty chair insert back on the toilet, so Michael peed all over his mother and the bed.
Tiredly Maria climbed outta bed and took her son into the shower, leaving the door open in case the baby woke up. Thankfully she was able to get cleaned up. Strip the bed, spray it down with disinfectant, and put clean sheets and blankets back on before a squall came from the kid's room.
She piled the dirty laundry in a corner so she could do the wash after her husband came home. Then she quickly set her son up in his high chair and gave him some scrambled eggs, then rushed to the crib to quiet a very upset little girl.
One arm holding her daughter she made up a fresh bottle with the other. She had gotten pretty good at doing things one handed now. Her son though decided he didn't want scrambled eggs. He made a game of throwing them at the wall.
Maria didn't have enough arms to clean that up and feed her daughter. Sarah wouldn't eat though. Her face was hot and her diaper was dry.
Worried, Maria let her son out of his chair before he toppled it over and called the doctor for an appointment.
The only appointment they had was in ninety minutes away and across town. They hadn't saved up enough for a car so Maria had to hurry out to the bus stop with her two kids in a folding stroller.
Maria made it to the doctor's office on time, but the doctor had an emergency which delayed her visit another hour and a half. Way behind, he only had a few minutes to tell Maria that her daughter was sick and dehydrated and needed some electrolytes along with an antibiotic.
Three hours later, Maria gets off the bus with her two kids and pushes them the three blocks home and then has to drag the heavy stroller back up the stairs. All she's had to eat all day is the outer edge of a cheese burger she shared with her son and a couple of sips of his milk. She couldn't afford to get anything else.
Thankfully Michael was still asleep so she left him in the stroller as she fixed a bottle of what looked like grape cool-aid but cost almost as much as a fine wine.
It took three times to get enough of the pink antibiotic into Sarah's mouth without her spitting it back out.
Half a bottle later both Maria and Sarah conked out.
The next thing Maria knows Michael is screaming at the top of his lungs to get out of the stroller and in walks her husband. She follows his gaze around the room at the scrambled eggs on the floor. Dirty laundry on the carpet. Dirty dishes from breakfast still on the table and all she can think is.
You're the one who put me in the middle of all this mess. If you dare yell at me I'm gonna let you have--.

Malcolm doesn't say a word. He lets his son out of the stroller and takes little Sarah to her crib. Then he turns around and opens his arms. He embraces his wife and can finally let go of all the anger and stress that has built up over the day and in that moment he knows that he would walk through fire just to be able to hold her. Another day like this was nothing he couldn't handle and he would at 6 am the next morning
Maria embraces her husband, letting go of the worry and stress, then she pulls back and looks into his eyes. In them she finds the love that had started them off on this journey. She looks down at their son who is hugging his daddy's leg and her sleeping daughter and a peace comes over her that is like nothing else in the world.

The Ghost of Squire House - Fantasy/Paranormal

For decades, the home built by reclusive artist, Paul Squire, stood empty on a windswept cliff overlooking the ocean. Those who attempted to live in the home soon fled in terror. Jennifer Barrett knows nothing of the history of the house she inherited. All she knows is that she's glad for the chance to make a new life for herself.

It's Paul Squire's duty to rid his home of intruders, but something about this latest newcomer's vulnerable status...and resemblance to someone from his past...dulls his resolve. Jennifer would like to find a real flesh-and-blood man to liven her days and nights--someone to share her life with-but living in the artist's house, studying his paintings, she is surprised at how close she feels to him.

A compelling, prickly ghost with a tortured, guilt-ridden past, and a lonely heroine determined to start fresh find themselves in a battle of wills and emotion in this story of love, time, and chance.

I took a late nap yesterday so I could stay up later than usual. I've been helping out a friend in another forum who is out of town and needed some help to do a simple thread start yesterday and today. It requires waiting for the new books to come in for the day so I can include some in my post. I am done now and am heading off to get some sleep. Luckily I can sleep in late.

One from my TBR list

The Leopard Tree by Tim Merriman
Publication Date: July 1, 2007
Three orphans from Kenya stow away on an airplane to embark on a desperate quest to meet the Secretary General of the United Nations in New York City and deliver a message they hope will help millions of homeless and hurting children in Africa. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz becomes their guidebook as they journey alone across the United States. The trio--one with HIV, one blind amputee, and one who hasn't spoken for years after watching her family slaughtered--find themselves embroiled in a situation beyond their imaginations as they get close to meeting their goal.

The Leopard Tree won the Best Young Adult Fiction Award in 2008 with Writer's Digest International Self-published Competition and a Third Place EVVY in the Fiction Division of Colorado Independent Publisher's Awards in 2008. This book was written with the hope of raising awareness of the millions of people in Africa who suffer the effects of malnutrition, malaria, HIV/AIDS, and the unspeakable atrocities associated with armed conflicts.

Lisa Brochu and Tim Merriman have spent the last four decades helping people connect with our global natural and cultural heritage. This is their first work of adult fiction, but they have several other non-fiction books in print. Through their books and speaking engagements, they hope to help others to know more and do more about the daily challenges in meeting basic needs that face tens of millions of people in developing nations. When they are not traveling the globe, Tim and Lisa live in Fort Collins, Colorado, on a small farm where they raise much of their own food. They can be contacted by email at lbrochu57@gmail.com and timfmerriman@gmail.com.

Happy Birthday Grandma Mary

Hope everyone is doing well. I am going to be gone most of today. I may work, not sure (paid either way = good). But I have a bunch of errands, grocery shopping and yes DRESS shopping to do. I am having a hard time finding a dress online. So I am gonna try to do a little actual shopping to see if I find something, or at least get an idea of size/style to help my online endeavors.
Then dinner with a friend I haven't seen since being home.

Happy birthday Grandma Mary!

Yesterday, I went to a lovely bbq at a friend's house. Tortilla chips & salsa, Bratwurst on a bun, kale & broccoli salad from Costco, and Tuxedo Cake. Yummy. Came home with leftover salad & cake.

Stuck with the bipap machine all night. Woke up quite a few times, but I think it's getting easier. Elizabeth S H & Oregon Dreamer, thanks for your words of support.
