Just my opinion but I think the consumer is being ripped off with the prices of the cases for the new Kindles 60 and 70 dollars are double the price high quality case I bought for my first Kindle. It as soft leather still attractive and protective unlike the hard shell and plastic feeling cases that are now being offered for prices they are selling real Kindles for. 70 dollars for a case is 1/3 of the price of the gadget itself. Thats ridiculous

I think the prices are exorbitant and exploitative and I wont buy one but will make one with some real leather and some elastic and a good sewing machine for about 10 dollars. I am disappointing in Amazon which is so responsive to customer satisfaction to be so greedy in this area.

Well, you aren't being forced to buy one, are you?

I love the amazon brand cases, they tend to fit better and seem to be better made than other accessories, but I just buy them used. I can deal with a few scratches from previous use and it's worth the discount. I got a non-lighted case for my baby kindle for $9 plus shipping. It had a few gouges out of the front but they were easily covered up with a sticker. I'm a happy camper.

Plus labour, plus the cost of the sewing machine... Which would make it more than $10...

Well no but isnt this a forum to voice opinions? If so what is the relevance of your post?

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 16, 2013 6:41:58 AM PDT
**Meya** says:
The relevance of the post? That no one is being forced to buy a cover they think is too expensive. There are many lower cost options. Buy what suits your needs and your wallet.

Your statement that the prices are exploitive is a grave insult to people who are actually being exploited. Nobody is forcing you to buy one. Most people apparently think that the prices are fair, considering that Amazon's cases seem to be fairly popular.

Then In your opinion my perception of cost is not a relevant topic for discussion on this forum. I should just meekly pay a third of the cost of the device for a cover or shut up? I had one response that was useful to look into a used cover and several that were unresponsive and not relevant to the thrust of my post. Im glad you have a source of money where this is not an issue but the"let them eat cake" philosophy is not available to me. Is that a problem to you:O)

Then don't buy it!
I think the GM Land Rover I saw the other day is way overpriced. I didn't go on the GM website to whine about it.

I don't think the word "exploited" means what the OP thinks it means.

You misunderstand the meaning of the words, "rip off". A rip off is when you THINK you're getting something that you're not.

An item that costs more than YOU think it "should" is not a rip off.

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 16, 2013 7:19:28 AM PDT
Again with the misuse of words. "Exploited" means that someone is taking advantage of a weakness. You can buy whatever cover you want. I have $9.99 covers on my Kindles. NO ONE can MAKE you pay anything you don't want to pay.

" Do you think that is an unreasonable perception and I should not be entitled to voice that perception"

Actually, no one said anything like that at all. You're entitled to your opinion. Everyone here is just saying, "Okay, that's your opinion, good for you. Buy what you like. Don't buy what you don't like."

Some people, including me, have an issue with you using the word "exploited" in reference to a voluntary transaction, but hey, that's our opinion.

I bought a $9 case for my new Fire. My second gen Fire is in a cover that cost $12.

Buy what suits your needs and your wallet. In no way did I suggest that you purchase anything you do not want/like/need.

I spend $25 per pound on salmon. Because it is something we like. I do not pay $50 for face cream.

See how it works? I spend my money in a manner that I deem acceptable. You can do the same thing.

What is the trouble?

" I just think the powers that be are taking advantage of a popular product and are raising the pries of the cases as the popularity increases. "

So the people who make the cases are seeing a big demand for their product and, in response, are raising the prices.

Holy Cow Batman! STOP THE PRESSES! Redcard just figured out Econ 101 all my himself! Next thing we know, he'll be drawing his very own supply and demand curves! Watch out Jeff Bezos - you've got competition!

Will there be charts? Charts can really spruce up a meeting.

redcard says:
OK fair point but the covers IMHO cost double what they should and still generate a profit. They are necessary for the care and maintainence of the device and that is the leverage for the high price. If they were not so necessary they would cost less. When essentially you just need a folder that your device will fit in and be reasonable secure the covers are over engineered. They are nice but to me not 70+ dollars nice.

Bottom line. I think they are over priced based on the popularity of the device. Thats all I meant or mean to say. Many of you disagree Fine. Ill find something else in a bit to "whine" about:O)

Oh yeah, tons of charts. And PowerPoint slides. Everyone loves PowerPoint slides. With lots of text, in different fonts. And dissolving transitions. And little animated GIFs.

And when I was in school, I used to pay $0.25 for a mid-court seat to watch my team as they won 10 NCAA championships in 12 years. When they played the Final Four in the arena across town, I paid $4.00 per game. What does that have to do with the price of a Kindle cover?
